Welcome one and all to 2018!! You may notice some new page layout in this and future editions. It’s not that I needed something to do and the old pages looked fine to me, but the files had been copied/edited/ pasted so many times that things were getting bollixed up a lot. Sometimes I’d spend more time matching fonts and sizes and making things crisp than I did anything else. Sometimes in any long term project the time comes to sever the beast at the neck and start over, so I did. I also started a new numbering convention so related things are placed together more efficiently. For the most part, it’s still the same, and I hope you like the new look and feel of the Beacon. As in the past, if you see something that looks like a link, blue underlined letters, it’s probably an active link, meaning you can just click on it and it’ll take you to the web page or open an email. The link to www.space.com below is an example, the blue underline doesn't show up well on this background, but click it anyway. There's also a page with lake level details, click the link on that one if you want to learn what really controls our lake levels. I've been getting this update since the 1970s an it's some pretty interesting stuff, now it's so much easier to access on line. This months cover honors an unusual lunar month here in January 2018. We'll have 2 full moons this month. The second is on the 31st and will be a Blue Moon, a Blood Moon, and a Super Moon. It will also feature a Total Lunar Eclipse, this is for me at least, something to celebrate, as I've said before, we don't get out much. Now with the Arctic Blast so far this season, there's a good chance for clear skies that night to enjoy the astrological festivities. The eclipse however, will be viewable only in the Southern Pacific Ocean, Australia, Asia, India, and some places I can't pronounce. For details click this link below, https://www.space.com/33786-lunar-eclipse-guide.html Despite the weather, the days are getting longer, we’ll gain about 2 minutes of daylight each day and spring’ll be here before we know it. For now, there’s a lot of work to be done planning and preparing all the activities at the club this year. I said a year ago that we were looking to make 2017 a most memorable good time for all, and with Pat and Nancy at the helm my prediction came to pass. Now it’s time to lend our time and efforts to Randy and Linda. There’s plenty of opportunity to get involved, we still need to fill some job slots. Let’s give them all the help we can, come to the club events, and bring friends and family. Together we’ll make 2018 as good a year as there’s ever been. Blue Skies Following Seas, Ron

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year As I write this article, Christmas is fast approaching and it allows us time to pause and reflect on the past year. We also give thanks for all that we have been blessed with such as Family, Friends and good times in 2017. With 2018 just days away, we can look forward to a new beginning, a new determination for better times ahead. Another chance to make a difference in our life and in the lives of others. Linda and I are both proud and humbled to be taking the helm as Commodore of the North Channel Yacht Club for this coming season. Looking back, there has been greatness and achievement in each and every Commodore that has led this Club throughout the years. I will do my upmost to uphold the standards that have been set and traditions that all of you have come to love about NCYC. That is my commitment to you and I hope you will work with me to make 2018 a year to remember. Please join me to experience the events held for your enjoyment and entertainment. I am excited to begin working with our new Board and Flag for 2018. The Club business continues even as the island sleeps through the winter months. It is remarkable to see the volunteerism of our membership going so strong. I will be sending a “Fan-out” shortly with the new Calendar of Events for 2018. Our membership Director, Debbie Siwek, will also be mailing the dues notices in the next several days also. Lastly, I hope you join Linda and me on January 20, 2018 at Villa Penna’s on Hayes in Sterling Heights for the Commodore’s Ball. I would be honored to have you celebrate with us in this annual gala event. Regards, Commodore Randy

I would like to acknowledge the 2018 leadership posts: Commodore Randy Pagel, First Mates President Josette Campbell and the Ancient Mariners President Archie Archibald. Thank you so much for your direction, dedication and selflessness. I also welcome the new Rear Commodore Bill Calihan along with the new board members: Tom Altobelli (BOD), Greg Brigman (Board Recorder) Ken Lipowski (Fleet Captain) and Debbie Siwek (BOD). I look forward to working with each of you and there is no doubt that we have a great team for 2018!!! Lastly, I would like to mention that the NCYC Board meetings will be held on the second Thursday of the Month at Penne Lane in Clinton Township, meeting starts at 7:00PM. For the summer months (June, July & August), they will be at NCYC. Please know that these are open meetings so feel free to come out and attend whether you would like to observe a meeting or if you have anything for the Good of the Order. As always, if you are unable to attend but would like your voice heard, please reach out to any Flag Officer or Director with your concerns or comments and they will be addressed during the meeting. 1973. Our grandparents went to Cape Cod and all we got was this super great beach house that’s still in the family in 2017.

It’s not easy to leave a lasting legacy. It requires thinking well beyond portfolio strategy to consider longer-term needs, like transferring wealth and minimizing tax implications. Since 1962, Raymond James advisors have carefully created forward-thinking financial plans that protect the things most important to you and your family. LIFE WELL PLANNED.

Terri and I hope all of you had a great Christmas holiday with family and friends and we wish all of you the very best in 2018. Our first big event of 2018 is just weeks away; NCYC’s Commodores Ball Honoring Commodore Randy Pagel and his Lady Linda. We look forward to another successful year, 2018, with Commodore Randy at the helm. I hope that if you are considering going to the Commodore’s ball that you get your tickets soon. Remember that “ Participation Brings Success to Organizations ”. A big thanks to our immediate Past Commodore Pat Carroll and his lady Nancy for a great and successful 2017. The club looks better than ever and is in great shape. Behind every good Commodore is a good Board. I am looking forward to working with Vice Commodore Ian Blackburn, the current Board of Directors as well as the new incoming Directors. We welcome Debbie Siwek, Tom Altobelli, and returning for another three-year term, Darryl Campbell and Ron Draper. Thanks goes out to our out-going Board Member Kim Miedema for all her hard work on the Board, all of her great photo’s that capture the heart and spirit of our club through photography and her great dedication to N C Y C. Also thank you to out-going board recorder Don Ruma, always on time and accurate. Even though the clubhouse is closed, the work continues. I am sure you read in the Commodore’s article about the window project and its progression. My last project as Harbor and grounds was to have three new ice cluster pilings installed along the sea wall of the east harbor. The clusters are there to protect our sea wall from damage in the winter. This job was completed in early December By Ron’s Marine Construction. We are currently in the process of acquiring a five-year permit to replace or improve our sea wall as needed. In closing I thank you, the membership, for your support. I look forward to serving as N C Y C’s Rear Commodore in 2018. -Bill Calihan

AMessage From ChaplainArtBrooks…

NOTES FROM THE CHAPLAIN, ART BROOKS I would like to thank Ron Draper for filling in for me during my medical procedures. It is nice to have someone “ have your back” during adversities. Thank you Ron. Thank you also for the many thoughtful cards. Following are members and family members who were lost or who were ill. Larry and Adrienne Gierlowski’s son is very ill. He is going through chemotherapy at this time. Long time member, Tom Karasinski, passed away on October 14. Tom and his wife, Verna, (Boots) joined NCYC in 1979. Another long time member Betty Hewitt passed away on October 4th. Betty and her husband Jack, were active members from 1971-2007. On November 7, father of Dan Coburn passed away. On December 27th , Norma Riehl passed away peacefully with her family at her side. Norma and her deceased husband, Jim, also were long time members. Please remember these members in your thoughts and prayers.

At the beginning of the New Year, resolutions are usually made. Consider this: Seeds of Faith by Clay Harrison Try each day to do some deed

That fills another’s earnest need. Wear a smile that shows you care, And take it with you everywhere. Lift folks up, don’t cut them down As you go about the town. Look for the good and not the bad, And try to make a sad heart glad. Try to brighten someone’s day And share your faith along the way. Share the love God’s given you, And give Him praise in all you do. Sow seeds of faith wher’ere you go And know that God will make them grow.

Matthew 17:20 With faith the size of a mustard seed, nothing shall be impossible.

tomorrow. I want to thank P/C Scott Bell, Bill Calihan, Ron Kemp, Ed Romatz, John Sweier and John Lutz for helping get the windows from the mainland to the island. They were considerably heavier than they looked. Rear-Commodore’s Comments Rear Commodore, Ian Blackburn I’d like to thank everybody for their efforts to close up the club for the winter. We’re on the home stretch for 2017. There are a few tasks that weren’t completed, such as by-law changes. Let’s make sure that we’re ready to hit the ground running in 2018 to get the committees in place to finish those efforts. Financial Report Treasurer, Brian Fringer The financial report was distributed via e-mail prior to the meeting and summarized. October 2017 revenue was $ 32,000 which included the $10,000 donation from the First Mates. The inventory and gift cards have been adjusted, and we’re up about $16,000 over last year. A few events remain to be reconciled. MOTION: Moved by Scott Greenfelder and seconded by Bill Calihan to approve the Financial Report. Water levels for the previous year and the current year to date are shown as a solid line on the hydrographs. A projection for the next six months is given as a dashed line. This projection is based on the present condition of the lake basin and anticipated future weather. The shaded area shows a range of possible levels over the next six months dependent upon weather variations. Current and projected levels (solid and dashed lines) can be compared with the 1918-2016 average levels (dotted line) and extreme levels (shown as bars with their year of occurrence). The legend below further identifies the information on the hydrographs.

The levels on the hydrographs are shown in both feet and meters above (+) or below (-) Chart Datum. Chart Datum, also known as Low Water Datum, is a reference plane on each lake to which water depth and Federal navigation improvement depths on navigation charts are referred. Ԁ All elevations and plots shown in this bulletin are referenced to International Great Lakes Datum 1985 (IGLD 1985). IGLD 1985 has its zero base at Rimouski, Quebec near the mouth of the St. Lawrence River (approximate sea level).

Information

Recorded water levels in this bulletin are derived from a representative network of water level gages on each lake (see cover map). Providers of these data are the U.S. Department of Commerce, NOAA, National Ocean Service, and Integrated Science Data Management, Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Canada. The Detroit District, Corps of Engineers and Environment Canada derive historic and projected lake levels under the auspices of the Coordinating Committee on Great Lakes Basic Hydraulic and Hydrologic Data. This bulletin is produced monthly as a public service. The Corps also, on a weekly basis publishes online the Great Lakes, Connecting Channels and St. Lawrence River Water Levels and Depths , which provides a forecast of depths in the connecting rivers between the Great Lakes and the International Section of the St. Lawrence River. This Monthly Bulletin of the Lake Levels for the Great Lake s may be obtained free of charge by writing to the address shown on the front cover, by calling (313) 226-6442 or emailing hhpm@usace.army.mil. Notices of change of address should include the name of the publication. This information is available on the internet at http://www.lre.usace.army.mil/Missions/GreatLakesInformation.aspx . According to preliminary estimates, basin-wide precipitation was near average for the basin as a whole during November, but Lake Michigan-Huron and Lake Ontario both received below average precipitation. Lake Erie received the most precipitation with estimates at 143% of its average November precipitation and Lake Michigan- Huron received the least rainfall at only 83% of its November average. Over the last 12 months, the total rainfall has been slightly above average for the Great Lakes basin. Net basin supply was above average for Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. Lake outflows in November were above average for all lakes. All of the lakes were above their November long-term average water levels. From October to November, all of the lakes experienced a decline of about an inch, except for Lake Ontario, which remained the same. This November’s levels were 7 to 15 inches above last year’s November level. All of the lakes are below their record high levels. Lake Superior is only 4 inches below its record high November level set in 1985. The other lakes are 13 to 21 inches below their record high November levels. All of the lakes remain above their long-term averages by 12 to 21 inches. Great Lakes Basin Hydrology November 2017

Notes: Values (excluding averages) are based on preliminary computations; cfs denotes cubic feet per second. 1 Net basin supply is the net result of precipitation falling on the lake, runoff from precipitation falling on the land which flows to the lake, and evaporation from the lake. Negative net basin supply denotes evaporation exceeded runoff and precipitation. The net total supply can be found by adding the net basin supply and the outflow from the upstream lake. 2 Does not include diversions. 3 Lake Ontario average water supplies and average outflows are based on period of record 1900-2005
