Found ed in 1949, USO is loca ted on 180 acres over looking Mission Bay , San Di ego Harbor and th e Pacific Ocean. Th e campus is named A lca la Park and is lo– ca ted ju st 10 minutes from downtown San Di ego and the wor ld famous San Di ego Zoo. Hi sto ri c Old Tow n is just minutes awa y as we l l. Th e c ity of San Di ego along with thi s cam pus tr aces th eir or igins to fifteenth ce ntury Spain. Th e campus was named after a Spanish v ill age nea r Madrid - Al ca la de Henares. Founded by th e Gree ks as Complutum, th e village was later renamed A l Kala (th e Cas tl e) by th e Moslems. Th e USO ca mpus i s rega rd ed as o ne of th e most arc hit ect ur all y uniqu e in st i tut ions in th e co untry, featur in g 18 ma j or buildin gs de– signed in an ornamental 16th century Spanish Renaissance st y le. Sin ce 1984, USO has compl eted 11 major co nstru c ti on and ex pan– sion proj ec ts. A fiv e-s tor y, Spanish Renaissan ce parkin g ga rage (1, 100 spaces ) w as comp leted in 1998. A landscaped fountain pl aza was fin– ished in th e fa ll of 1995, co nn ect ing th e entrances of th e lmmacu lata and Hugh es Administration Center. In 1992 , th e university compl eted the 45 ,000 square foot Loma Hall , w hi c h in c ludes an expand ed book– store, a larger mail ce nter, c lassrooms and laboratori es . In 1990, the renovated Kath erin e M. and Geo rge M. Pardee Jr. Lega l Researc h Center opened, a fac ility that offers the lates t in informat ion tec hnol ogy. ACADEIUICS USO enrolls more th an 6, 800 students w ho have a choi ce of more tha n 50 undergraduate and graduate deg ree pr og rams . Th e uni vers ity' s academi c units in clude the Co ll ege of Arts and Sc iences, and the Schoo ls of Bus in ess Administration , Edu ca tion , La w and Nursing. Class size ge nerally ave ra ges betwee n 18-25 students with th e student to teac her ra tio being 18 :1. Over 97 perce nt of USD 's full-time faculty hold doc– tora t es. In th e annual ratin gs of th e country's co ll eges and universiti es, pub– lished by U.S. News & World Report, USO moved from th e reg ional to national ca tegor y in 1994 . Th e university is ranked among th e top 100 sc hools in the nation.

STUDENT LIFE Student activit ies in c lude cultural events, dances, boat c rui ses , beac h parti es, BBQ 's, co nce rts , comedy nights , sympos ia and mu c h more. Th e intramura l program is also an integ ral part of stud ent li fe o n ca mpus w ith ove r two-thirds of th e USO community partaking in intramural sports. ATHLETICS The Un iversity of San Di ego is a member of the West Coast Conference for nea rl y all sports and competes in 16 intercolleg iate sports on the NCAA Divi sion I leve l. Women's sports include: basketball , crew, cross country, soccer, softba ll , swimming, tenni s and vo ll eyba ll. Men 's sports inc lude: baseball , basketball , crew, cross coun– try, golf, football, soccer and tenni s. Since 1990 USO teams have won seven confer– ence champi onships; made 20 post-season appea rances; had 19 Conference Coaches of the Yea r; 16 Conference Pl ayers of the Yea r, 11 Conference Fres hman of the Yea r, three WCC Schol ar Athl etes of the Year and 21 NCAA All -Ameri ca ns. Thi s past yea r, Zuza na Lesenarova , a juni or on the women 's tenni s team, earned her third-stra ight NCAA All-American honor and won the schoo l's first ever Divi sion I nati onal cham– pionship by winning the 1999 NCAA Women 's Tenni s Si ngles Championship. Junior Peti a Yanchulova also ea rned First Team Al l-Ameri ca Acco lades - the first in program history.

DID YOU KNOW • The University of San Diego was selected by the John Templeton Foundation for its 1997-98 Honor Roll of Character-Building Colleges. The honor roll recognizes 135 four year accredited undergraduate insti– tutions that emphasize character building an integral part of the col– lege experience. Foundation officials made special mention of USD's "Eth– ics Across the Curriculum," a cam– pus-wide initiative funded with a two-year , $138,000 grant from the E.L. Wiegand Foundation . USO is one of eight California collcgec and uni– versities named to the honor roll.
