Film Studies

Overview Film Studies offers pupils the chance to develop their creativity, cultural understanding and critical thinking in relation to one of the most powerful of contemporary art forms. Students study key works of British, American and international cinema all the way back to the Lumière Brothers, right up to present day cinema. They also learn about institutions within the media industry and about the way films are marketing to reach audiences through production, distribution and exhibition. The majority of students' work is assessed through an external exam (70% of their overall grade), however the course still contains a strong emphasis on practical film-making skills which includes both a research project and the opportunity to plan and produce short films on digital video using the School's own video editing facilities. Film plays an important part in the extra-curricular life of the School and from the beginning of next year will be situated within the brand new building with a cinema area and a specialist film studies classroom equipped with editing booths for small group editing. An after School club will also offer students the opportunity to further hone their film- making skills. • Developments in US Film. This component assesses knowledge and understanding of three US films chosen from a range of options. Assessment consists of four questions on one pair of US mainstream films and one US independent film.

• Narrative, Representation and Film Style. This component assesses knowledge and understanding of three global films produced outside the US chosen from a range of options.

• Production. This component assesses the ability to apply knowledge and understanding of film to a production and its accompanying evaluative analysis. Learners produce: ▪ one genre-based film extract (either from a film or from a screenplay) ▪ one evaluative analysis of

the production, where learners analyse and evaluate their production in relation to comparable, professionally - produced films or screenplays.
