fhis }Car the L D Torcro Baseball ·1 cam started tis first year as a Division I contingent in which they pla}Cd against thirty-five Division I teams, an addition of thirty teams from last }Car' season oached by John unningham, the squad had equ.11 representation from the different classes and its overall speed improved from last year, causi ng better defensive play. For the first time, there was no set pitching rotation \\hich led to an interesting season . Coach John Cunningham expected good results from the seniors which he felt were necessary for the success of the team.

Tipton a nd Paul Engel who were tough opponents against the Torero rivals. Jeff was the I978 Batting champion with an average of .333 for 99 times at bat; a nd Paul, was the RBI Champion with 41 and an average of .3 14. Another player who was beneficial to the team was J.C. transfer Don Slater, center outfield. This year's schedule brought USO up against such forces as Azusa-Pacific, SDSU, UCSD, UC Irvine, Long Beach, Pepperdine, UC Santa Barbara, Loyola, Los Angeles State a nd Dominguez Hills.
