A PUBLICATION ABOUT LIFE AT FRENCHMAN’S CREEK BY, FOR AND ABOUT OUR MEMBERS

The Opening Dinner-Dance of the 2018-2019 season was held on Saturday night, December 8, with an attendance of nearly 300, filling all sections of the main dining room. It was an exceptionally beautifully decorated setting for what was a truly lovely evening. In addition to the beautiful room and a delicious meal (thanks to Chef Berndt and the dining staff), The Chase Band provided a great evening of music. The dance floor was overflowing all night long as they played a wonderful variety of songs for any type of danc- ing preference. A super job was done by the entertainment committee led by Judy Konigsberg and Ethel Schultz, and Paula Wolfson who was responsible for so much, especially the beautiful décor. Of course, thank you also to Martina and the Frenchman’s staff. It was a night to remember.

Carol Smith

At the age of 76, I learned 2 valuable lessons. I went to the beach today with my son, Charles, my daughter-in-law, Sandi and my 18 year old grand daughter, Maya. It was a last minute decision to go, but I thought it might be my last time at the beach with them for awhile and in the back of my mind I wanted to leave them with the impression that I was a good sport. Tomorrow the forecast was for cool weather and then they would be gone. I even put on a bathing suit! I had no plans to go into the ocean exactly. I haven’t been in the ocean for years and today the surf looked rough. Actually I did go in but soon realized I was not able to catch my breathe and headed in to shore. I guess this really would be my last time in the Atlantic Ocean. Sandi came with me to help me and I really did need help. I was having trouble getting my footing. As I struggled out of the water, my engagement ring flew off my finger! At first, I couldn’t believe it but then the reality sunk in. I remained calm. I just knew there was nothing I could do. However Charles raced up to “lost and found” and got three pairs of goggles and raced back down to the beach. Of course it was totally ridiculous to think we could find my ring. But as I tried to catch my breathe and also tried to get out of the water without being knocked down again, I said to myself, tears forming in the back of my eyes, “ it’s only a thing” and “I’ve had it for 58 years…but no big deal, I’m insured.” It was more important that I get out of the water while continuing to breathe. The lesson was that possessions, even valuable ones, are just things. Don’t get too attached to things that could be lost, damaged or stolen. It’s just NOT that important…better to breathe.

A few minutes later as I walked along the shoreline, thinking what my next step would be…call my husband, Michael, I guess and he could call the insurance company…I looked out in the water and Maya was holding up her arm. It was impossible that she had found my ring so I assumed she was joking. BUT SHE HAD FOUND IT!!! She said she only saw a circular outline just under the sand and reached for it… Nothing is impossible, they say. The impossible is possible, they say. Shall I say, miracles do happen? So the lessons taught to me this day… I do believe in miracles and I can easily let go of possessions. Oh yes, here’s one more lesson—-Never wear jewelry in the ocean!

Charlie Shyer is a three year old mini golden doodle who is spending his first winter in Florida and adapting well to life at Frenchman’s Creek. He enjoys meeting other dogs on his walks around the community and at the dog park. He has not, however, taken to riding in a golf cart. We are working on that. When not in Florida, Charlie lives in Purchase, New York with his 20 year old, Siamese cat “brother “ Ming. Charlie’s “parents”, BONNIE and HENRY SHYER , enjoy meeting other puppy parents, too!

Reba and Mr. Kip

I have had Dobermans for the past 20 years. The most fun time was when I had three together. They are loyal -lovable -gentle -and smart , and are called Velcro dogs because they want to be with people all the time. I decided I wanted to rescue a Doberman instead of going to a breeder. However, I had walked into a Petsmart ,that I knew was having a very large rescue group, only to look and I basically walked out with Kip. He has three things my oth- er dogs did not have -a tail ,floppy ears and something between his legs. He is a Louisiana leopard spotted Catahoula full of energy and is awesome with all dogs . He was found with his littermates by a ranger in a wooded area in Georgia, went to a local rescue where Ruffhouse rescue then brought him to New York. My Doberman is named after Reba McEntire and my c atahoula is named after Kip Moore (country singers). My days are planned around them!

DEBBIE HORNSTEIN

While on tour with member prospects I came across this beautiful bird. He was pecking in the planter (mess on ground). He then decided to follow us and abruptly stopped when he reached the carpet. He began prancing back and forth from one leg to the other. The prospects touring the club said, "look he's welcoming us". PAMELA RUDD Director of Marketing

Featured in the Palm Beach Post of December 27, 2018, Police dogs and their handlers have a new training ground in Palm Beach Gardens. Pictured above left to right are: Mike Valerio with Fargo, Chris Baez with Kestor, Matt with Justice, and Brian Tiyaloglu with Valeo. Donations from the Palm Beach Gardens Police and Fire Foundation and Frenchman’s Creek Charities paid for this $20,000 complex. Palm Beach Gardens, Jupiter and Tequesta police and their furry crime fighting companions train together at least eight hours once a week in a secluded field off Richard Road. The dogs and handlers use custom built props to practice strategic maneuvering, working in tandem to give the human officers cover when they find themselves in dangerous situations.

In addition to the above, we have helped to supply our second service dog to a wounded veteran. He is a Marine awarded three purple hearts. He lives in Missouri, his wife died and he has a small daughter, which is why he needs a service dog. He came to furry friends to get his dog this fall and will return to Palm Beach Gardens in time for the Westminster Dog Show, part of Frenchman’s Creek Charities Weekend in March.

A DECADE OF IMPACT: HOW FRENCHMAN’S CREEK CHARITIES HELPED LOGGERHEAD MARINE LIFE CENTER. A Public communication put out by Loggerhead explains how we have helped the Center become a powerful global influence in sea turtle research and ocean conservation education. In 2004 when the Marinelife Center of Juno Beach planned a new facility to expand its ocean conservation and rehabilitation efforts, Frenchman’s Creek Charities Foundation generously provided essential leadership. The Foundation’s rigorous giving criteria and subsequent support gave other foundations and individuals the confidence to join the emerging campaign. In 2007 more than 70,000 guests visited, in 2017, they welcomed 350,000 visitors. With our Frenchman’s support, they built a world renowned sea turtle hospital and rehabilitation yard, earning the Center the top reputation for sea turtle health; became a local STEM education center and world leader in sea turtle research.

Ladies Member-Member Golf Tournament

January Nine Wine and Dine Frenchman’s golfers welcomed 2019 with yet another great Nine, Wine and Dine tour- nament on January 4. Again a wonderful turnout of 176 – 44 teams, which were divided into four flights that more than covered both courses - played a step-aside scramble. As usual, golf was followed by cocktails, hors d’oevres and dinner. One change this month was in the prizes awarded, with all the first place winners receiving dinners in the Grill Room and all second place winners receiving a bottle of wine. Co-chairs Robin Rosenblatt and Sue Shaw, with the cooperation of our great golf and dining staffs did a super job and deserve many thanks. Their efforts have led to an already large sign-up eagerly awaiting February’s tournament. Mimi Bergel The 2019 Ladies Member-Member Golf Tournament began on Tuesday, January 8. The golfers made their own twosomes and each pairing was a match play – better ball of part- ners. One pair in each group was eliminated the first day, with continuing twosomes again paired for the second round of play on Thursday, January 10. Again half the players were eliminated and the finals were played on Thursday, January 17, with one pair of winners in each of the four flights. Winners and Runners-Up on previous page. Congratulations to all.

The Bronx Wanderers appeared at Frenchman’s Creek on Wednesday, January 16, 2019 as part of the Headliners series. They have a permanent stint at Ballys Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas and appeared here for the second time to thank Frenchman’s. It seems a few years ago, when they played for us, there was a talent agent in the audience and the rest is history. The lead is the Father, Vinnie, naturally born and bred in the Bronx. with his two sons and two of their friends. To say the evening was magical is an understatement. The buffet dinner great– the dessert beyond delicious– a lava cake with caramel ice cream. The music ranged from the 50’s to the 70’s to today with a fabulous rendition of Bruno Mars by one of the sons. A Neil Diamond impersonation and even Elvis made an “appearance.” The consensus of all who attended was the evening proved to be the best ever. Forty-five minutes of continuous songs and everyone stayed til the end of the evening. A wonderful job done by our Entertainment Chairs– Judy Konigsberg and Ethel Schultz.

Kids Volunteer for the Red Cross had its fourth year event during the Christmas holidays. This program provides comfort kits for people who have been dislocated from their homes either by fire or natural disaster. About 40 children came to help with making the kits and in doing so learn what volunteering is all about. Some of the older children got credit for their schools. We are planning on doing this activity each year. Andrea Finkel

Recently, as we wished everyone a Happy New Year, I thought not for the first time, that “Happy is easier if you have “Healthy.”

And on January 9th, a large audience of very interested members hung on every word of the presentation of four distinguished members/doctors at the discussion titled, “HOUSE CALLS, The Doctors Are In.” All four addresses were comprehensively illustrated by our overhead projections system which is customized for 360 degree viewing so that everyone could see everything!

Dr. Larry Cohen spoke about skin cancers and how to recognize them and try to prevent them. (sunblock, sunblock, sunblock)

Dr. Burt Greenberg spoke about risk factors for coronary heart disease and for atrial fibrillation and some ways to help your heart stay healthy.

Dr. Mel Dinner spoke about reconstructing parts of the body disfigured by birth or illness.

Dr. Larry Singerman spoke about diseases of the eyes such as cataracts, glaucoma and age related macular degeneration. An interesting Q and A followed.

This program was brought to us by the team in Marketing and by members, Beth Elgort and Marie Adler Kravacas. Norma Lippman

Perhaps this has happened to you– Last week, I tried to go through the gate and it did not go up. Okay, I thought a fluke– when it happened three more times, I then asked the gate guard what was the problem. It seems that the POA has enforced a rule that the transponders expire every three years. This is for your security, that you are still a member and or permitted a transponder i.e. an aide who lives with the resi- dent. Staff vehicles are renewed every 12 months and guests can only have a transponder for 30 days. If you encounter this problem, have the gate guard check your transponder and he/she can reinstate you immediately. Sometimes, these transponders do get damaged and of course a new one will be installed. On another note, PLEASE PLEASE consider what you are wearing at dusk or night– light clothing and most important something reflective– security gives out reflective vests and LED bracelets for your safety. They are Free! WALK opposing traffic and on the right side of the street.

Donna and Bob Smolens, were interested in community living with many activities, a fitness center, and most importantly a beach club. After playing golf, ( Bob), and viewing one house on Rivoli Drive, they knew that Frenchmans Creek was the place for them.

Darien, Connecticut has been home for 28 of their 34 years of marriage. They raised 2 sons, David, 29, recently married to Kira and Jeffrey, 25. David and Kira are in the process of moving to Los Angeles, he works for Oaktree, a private debt and equity firm and Kira is interviewing for a position with one of the advertising firms there. Jeffrey is currently working with a wealth man- agement firm in Hingham, Massachusetts and deciding whether to resume a career in sports management or stay in finance. He was previously working for the Yankees Triple A team in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

Bob is a tax principal with Deloite. A graduate of New York Law, and Georgetown Law School, ( LLM), Bob is a tax lawyer by background with expertise in publicly traded partnerships and real estate, and private equity partnerships. However at the end of May, Bob will retire, and devote more time to playing golf and traveling. Donna has a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in Economics from Fordham University. She has had over a 30 year career in private equity related firms. She is currently a senior adviser to Insight Venture Partners in New York. She is a gourmet cook, and a lover of the beach. Bob and Donna look forward to meeting more Frenchmans Creek friends, and becoming active members of our community. They plan on returning to Darien for the late Spring and Summer months returning to Frenchman’s in late Autumn.

We thank Judy Tobin for this column

The Ryder Cup was played in Guyancourt, France this past year and when you entered the grounds, there were two large TEES greeting you. One for the Europeans and one for the Americans. These two tees are now gracing our pro shop for the remainder of the season. They are made out of resin by Hubert Privé. He is a French sculptor who loves golf and is known very well in the European golf world. He sculpts with anything related to golf. Another sculpture of his is on display in the pre foyer. He was originally with a luxurious well known French design h ouse and when he left, he pursued his love of golf and art. His smaller tee ; made out of black cherry wood , is also on display in the golf shop. Mr. Privé will sculpt a tee to your specific requirements. The House of Arts Gallery at Harbourside has graciously lent these works of Hubert to us. Gallery owner, Lucien Benisti has also lent us the modern paintings gracing the walls in the lower level of the clubhouse.

We urge you all to visit his gallery– it is a treat.
