 1. Identify the patient.  2. Check the medical order or clinical pathway/care plan. Review the chart for any limitations in physical activity or contraindications to the procedure.  3. Introduce yourself, explain the rationale for the procedure to the patient and family, and obtain consent.  4. Gather the necessary equipment. Equipment: denture cup, water in glass or plastic cup, denture paste, denture brush, denture adhesive (if required), washcloth, gauze squares.  5. Undertake a risk assessment, if indicated.  6. Perform hand hygiene.  7. Put on personal protective equipment (PPE), if indicated.  8. Ensure that patient privacy is maintained.  9. Lower the bed side rail and assist the patient to a sitting position, if permitted, or turn the patient onto their side. Place a towel across the patient’s chest. Raise the bed to a comfortable working position. 10. If the patient is able to do so, have them remove their own dentures. Otherwise, apply gentle pressure with 4 × 4 cm gauze to grasp the upper denture plate and remove it. Place it immediately in the denture cup. Lift the lower dentures with gauze, using a slight rocking motion. Remove and place in the denture cup. 11. Place paper towels or a washcloth in the bottom of the sink while brushing the dentures so that if they slip they will not be damaged. Using the toothbrush and paste, brush all surfaces gently but thoroughly. If the patient prefers, add denture cleaner to a cup with water and follow directions for preparation. 12. Rinse the dentures thoroughly with water. Apply denture adhesive, if appropriate.
