15. Rinse with warm water until all the shampoo is removed. Repeat shampoo, if necessary. 16. If the patient has thick hair or requests it, apply a small amount of conditioner to their hair and massage it in, avoiding any cuts, lesions or sore spots. 17. If the drain container or basin is small, empty it before rinsing their hair again. Then rinse with warm water until all conditioner is removed. 18. Remove the shampoo board and place a towel around the patient’s head, patting the hair dry. 19. Remove the towel and gently brush their hair, removing any tangles. Dry the hair as quickly as possible to prevent the patient from becoming chilled. Blow-dry hair on a cool setting, if allowed and the patient wishes. If not, consider covering the patient’s head with a clean towel until their hair is dry. 20. Arrange the hair according to the patient’s preferences. 21. Change the patient’s gown and remove the protective pad. Replace the pillow. 22. Return the patient to a comfortable position. 23. Raise the bed side rail and lower the bed. 24. Remove used PPE/equipment and dispose of them in the appropriate receptacle. 25. Perform hand hygiene. 26. Replace clean equipment in the appropriate storage area. 27. Document in the patient’s chart and report any abnormal results to a senior nurse, medical officer or endorsed nurse practitioner immediately.
