1995 TORERO OUTLOOK

The 1995 season looks bright for the USD women's soccer team as 16 players return from the '94 roster. A young team last year that recorded an 8-11-1 record and 3-4 conference record has matured and are ready to move up in the WCC standings. Led by the Toreros all-time scoring leaders, junior Michele Kennedy and senior Dawn Birdsall, the offense should improve on its 32 goals it scored last year. Kennedy, a '94 All-West Coast Conference First Team selection, led the team in scoring with 21 points and was ranked third in the WCC in assists with 11. She has totaled 52 points over her two-year career. Birdsall is a two-time AII-WCC First Team pick and has 39 points in her three-year career. She scored five goals last year, second on the team, and had 14 points. Besides Kennedy and Birdsall, there are three others that scored in double figures who also return in 1995. Forward Jenny Jongejan, whose six goals led the team, and midfielders Monica Costello and Annmarie Snorsky, who scored four goals apiece, will also be key in the Torero offen– sive attack. The defense again looks tough as junior Michele Bush will continue to be the leader. Bush was an AII-WCC First Team selection in '94 and started all 20 games for the Toreros. She is joined by five returnees: Kristen Campbell, Mindy Campbell, Amanda Stack, Dorie Flynn and Joy lwanaga. Both Campbells also started all 20 games for USD in '94. Both goalkeepers will return and battle for the starting job. Senior Danielle Lopez was a AII– WCC Academic Team member last year. Sophomore Allison Worden was named to the AII-WCC Honorable Mention team and started in thirteen games last year. Six newcomers add depth to the team led by senior midfielder Shawn Viloria-Burns. Viloria– Burns transferred from San Diego State where she was the career scoring leader. Junior defender Amy Goaziou transferred from the University of Portland, a Final Four team in '94. Both should make an immediate impact on the team. The Toreros 1995 schedule looks tough with four of the first six matches on the road. The Toreros who will have to face WCC Champion Portland and WCC-runner up Santa Clara on the road this year and tackle always tough Stanford at home in the second week of the season. "The key to the season will be to quickly integrate the new players into the team and find the right combinations," said head coach Tony da Luz. "It may take us awhile to gel, but by mid-season we will be very difficult to beat. Our goal this year is to reach the NCAA's and see how far we can go. If we can do that in only our fourth season, I will be satisfied."
