GRETA GARBO’S NEW YORK RIVER RETREAT Located in the famously private Campanile building, is movie icon Greta Garbo’s New York City retreat. The sophisticated three-bedroom aerie perched above the East River was said to remind the actress of her native Stockholm. The actress, who received an honorary Oscar in 1955, purchased the property in 1953 and lived in the fifth-floor unit until her death in 1990. Her family continues to own the unit and kept much of her original vision for the home intact including the pink and green color scheme. Garbo’s favorite room was said to be the expansive L-shaped living room which has a fireplace with a green marble surround and separate library/ den. The walls of the spacious master bedroom are adorned in Garbo’s favorite rose-hued Fortuny silk. The home’s combination of grand scale and an intimate soul make it a modern classic.
