Two longitudinal transducers are used to measure the tube’s 0.4 to 2mm wall thickness, OD and ovate conditions. A third longitudinal transducer is used to monitor and adjust for the water temperature to ensure accuracy of the wall thickness measurement. Maximum throughput speed for detecting 12mm long defect notches is 60m/min. For this system, the computer based Echomac Model FD-4 ultrasonic instrumentation electronics provides 14 channels of test capability. The FD-4 features optimum signal to noise, adjustable pulse firing sequence to avoid crosstalk in multi-channel applications, and full network support for remote viewing and control. Systems with up to 32 independent test channels can also be provided. In addition, MAC provided a complete mechanical system for marking, positioning and driving the tube through the test station. MAC also offers a complete line of eddy current instrumentation and mechanics that is well suited for inspecting copper tubing for ID/OD surface and subsurface defects. The MultiMac ® eddy current instrument provides up to eight test channels and can be installed with encircling, sector or rotary sensors to allow testing for short and long, continuous defects. Ferrous inclusions can also be detected using a magnetic inclusion detector (MID) flux leakage coil in addition to the eddy current sensors.
