Technical Visits

Opening Ceremony Finlandia Hall, Congress Wing Sunday, 28 June at 18:00-19:30

Technical Visits The technical visits will cover the most advanced parts of Finland’s technology and metals industries. Every day from Monday to Friday and even the previous Saturday there will be an opportunity to discover some of the most interesting industrial companies and research institutes. Depending on the site locations, technical visits will vary from a half a day to a full day.

The Opening Ceremony of the 68 th IIW Annual Assembly and International Conference will take place at Finlandia Hall, one of the landmarks of Helsinki designed by the famous Finnish architect Alvar Aalto. The programme will include short speeches by the Chair of the Local Organising Committee, the IIW President, and a special guest followed by the traditional ceremony of IIW Prizes and Awards. The programme also includes performances of national music, and other items of artistic entertainment. Dress code: business attire

Posiva Oy is an expert organisation in Nuclear Waste Management. It was established in 1995. The main task is the final disposal of spent nuclear fuel generated by the owners, Teollisuuden Voima Oyj and Fortum Power & Heat Oy at the Loviisa and Olkiluoto nuclear power plants. The goal is to start the final disposal of spent nuclear fuel in the 2020s. The investigations, the development of the final disposal technology, the detailed design of the final disposal facility and the construction of the underground characterisation facility ONKALO are all focused on accomplishing the goal – safe implementation of the final disposal. Olkiluoto Visitor Center is connected to Helsinki by a modern highway. one sixth of the yearly electricity consumption in Finland. Climate friendly nuclear electricity not only benefits the Finnish society but also reduces the environmental impact of energy production. The guided tour in Olkiluoto includes introduction to the company, a tour of the “Electricity from Uranium” exhibition, a visit to the repository for low and intermediate level operating waste and a tour to the ONKALO Research Gallery. For the Welcome Reception following the Opening Ceremony, join us for drinks and Finnish delicacies at Finlandia Hall Restaurant. Experience the amazing light summer night and the bay view through the wide windows of the Finlandia Hall and during your way back to the hotels nearby. Dress code: business attire

Finnish Evening Hilton Helsinki Kalastajatorppa, Conference Wing Monday, 29 June at 19:00-23:00

The Finnish Evening will take place at the beautiful Hilton Helsinki Kalastajatorppa, only a 15 min. drive from the city and overlooking the Gulf of Finland. You can try your luck in Finnish summer outdoor games such as boot throwing and enjoy our grill buffet while admiring the light summer night and the surrounding nature at its best. The night will end in a performance of Finnish folkloric traditions. Dress code: casual

Gala Banquet Finlandia Hall, Piazza Wednesday, 1 July at 19:30-23:00

Monday, 29 June at 8:30-12:00

The Gala Banquet will take place in Finlandia Hall with a delicious dinner and great entertainment. The programme will include short speeches followed by the Service Recognition Awards. Finally, the IIW Flag handover ceremony will end the official part of the event and music, dancing and networking will take place later in the evening. Dress code: formal

Arctech Helsinki Shipyard Inc. specialises in Arctic shipbuilding technology, e.g. building icebreakers and other Arctic offshore and special vessels. The company is not only experienced but also the forerunner in developing and applying technological innovations. About 60% of icebreakers that operate today were built in Helsinki. The shipyard is situated on the coastline of Helsinki, only a few kilometers away from the main event venues and the hotels.

International Conference Reception Hotel Scandic Park Thursday, 2 July at 18:30-20:00

The Welcome Reception of the International Conference will take place at hotel Scandic Park, only 50 m from the main venue hotel Crowne Plaza. Hors d´oeuvers and drinks will be provided. Dress code: business attire
