Constable Jones also indicated he would attend the Annual Charity Ball (see Diary Dates). Better still, he completed an application form and joined the IPA.

Chief Constable Dave Jones met with Dave Taylor, Secretary General of Section UK and a member of the team, to discuss plans for the drive which takes place in 2015. The team aim to raise money for the Section UK chosen charity ‘National Police Memorial Day’. Dave Jones had met previously with Dave Taylor to discuss IPA and the benefits membership could offer. Members were out in force promoting the IPA at the Emergency Services Show held at the National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham. Members from Birmingham, West Midlands branch and Coventry & Warwickshire branch staffed the stand for the two days, along with Lib Jones from BSAC. On the first day, 5 Region Chair Andy Gregory had a surprise when the IPA stand was approached by his former Deputy Chief Constable, Paul Leopold. Paul is now the Chair of the Ambulance Service Benevolent Fund, having retired from West Midlands police over twenty years ago. Andy and Paul discussed past experiences and how the police service has changed since Paul’s retirement. Andy first met Paul when he was a young probationary constable working on a van patrol that had been called to a siege situation in south Birmingham. Paul, then Assistant Chief Constable, had climbed aboard the van to brief the officers. Andy recalled being posted on the cordon that day and Paul related his recollection of what has now become quite a famous case in Birmingham. Over the two days at the show, the IPA stand received numerous visitors, including police colleagues from Iceland - Andri Asmundsson, Agust Einarsson, and Heidar Hannesson. Thanks to Andy Gregory, Simon Barrett, Bob Bird, Tom Keady, Sally Simpson, John Colledge, Julian Grubb, Bob Duxbury and Lib Jones for working the stand.

A Rally with a Sting in the Tale? Steve and Lynn Palmer, with help from Dave and Sue Stapleton of Cambridgeshire branch, organised their third Camping and Caravan Group rally at Ludham - in the heart of the picturesque Norfolk Broads. This year twenty nine caravans attended - a record! Group’s entertainment for a trip from Martham Ferry marina. The boats made a stop at Horsey wind pump. After tea and cakes the Group set off across Hickling Broads to the Pleasure Boat Inn for lunch.

Steve organized an evening BBQ and invited members from Norfolk and Suffolk branch - 11 of their members enjoyed the evening. A raffle was held and £131 was raised for The Royal British Legion, Chatteris Branch - who had loaned a gazebo for use at the rally. Major Norman Larke was very pleased with the donation and said it would be used to take the veterans to The National Memorial Arboretum, in Stafford.

Steve reported, “It is with regret that I have to report on this occasion that we had some unwanted visitors. A swarm of honey bees landed in the grass at the rear of John Lee’s caravan. The bees were eventually removed by a local bee keeper. They got their own back though as John was stung as they were being rounded up!” Four picnic boats were arranged as part of the
