JOHN GUNTHER Assistant Coach

Coach Gunther will be begin- ning his sixth season as the Toreros pitching coach. John graduated with a degree in sociology from U.C. Santa Bar- bara, where he played catcher for the Gauchos. He then received his Masters in Physical Edu- cation from the University of the Pacific. After one year of semi- pro ball, he spent a few years at various coaching assignments before becoming pitching coach for two seasons at San Diego State. He then spent four years at Mesa College as an assistant, before coming to USD. John and his wife Diane reside in San Diego with their three sons, Scott (11), Paul (8), and Tim (5) Coach Saverino will be in his 2nd year of coaching at USD, and it will be a short one at that. Mike will help coach the first half of the season before becoming player-coach for the California Angels minor league system later this spring. It will be Mike's fourth year as an infielder with the Angels and his second as a coach. Mike graduated from USD in 1980 with a degree in Behavioral Science. As a four year starter for USD, Mike holds five USD records and can be found in the top three of numerous Torero records. In 1980, Mike was MVP while bat- ting .323 with 55 runs scored, 63 hits, 55 walks and 14 sacrifice hits. Mike is single and resides in San Diego. MIKE SAVERINO Assistant Coach

JOHN MULLEN Assistant Coach

Coach Mullen will be in his 1st year of coaching at USD. John is currently enrolled in the USD Master's program for Business Administration. John was a four year player at USD and last year was the team 's M.V.P. and an SCBA First Team member. While batting .351 for the year, John led the team in at bats (168), runs scored (34), hits (59), and total bases (71 ). He batted .394 in SCBA action. His 19 game hitting streak in which he banged out a total of 38 hits is a new Torero

record. He can be found among the top three in numerous single season and career records including hits (227) and triples (20). John is single and resides in San Diego. 3
