capabilities of the machine originally developed in collaboration with a cable manufacturer in the early 90s. New electronics have been added to improve the discrimination of energy returns from the four main interfaces within the cable, as well as detecting the contaminants, protrusions and voids (CPVs) within the insulation layer and associated semiconductor layers. Improved processing capabilities have also been added, using advanced algorithm knowhow previously de- veloped by Acuity mainly for military sonar projects, and incorporating recent processor improvements made in industry standard motherboard designs. New image processing techniques have also been devised and implemented. The monitoring software automatically creates the four-layer cable geometry displays during the manufacturing run, displaying highly accurate short and long-term trends over all four layers as well as concentricity. Detection of features above a user de ned threshold level raises an immediate alarm, and presents the feature information to the operator whilst manufacturing continues. This allows production decisions about cable manufacturing problems to be made in real time. Completely new and easy to use cable data analysis software has been written by Acuity as an o -line post run analysis tool which can be used to re-analyse such detections or to conduct a detailed examination of features with lower thresholds. For the rst time, a complete electronic record of the internal features and geometry of the cable is now permanently stored for every millimetre of HV cable produced. The CDA software automatically creates a feature summary display for the whole cable production run, highlighting potential problem areas to production and QA personnel. This can be done remotely, making the speci cations directly from the database. Automatically presented trend curves with over dimensional cost calculations. A programme for material cost reductions can be reached within seconds. The operator is also presented with a dynamic set target area depending on the standard variation of the walls for the measured product in the actual extruder line. Also an over dimensional cost calculation is presented based upon the true two-dimensional measured area for 1,000m or feet of the measured product. Feedback from customers for annual savings is typically in the $300,000 region. KSMData is an o ce programme with a Dataviewer module to recreate KSM protocols including measured image. KSMAnalyze is a tool to analyse measuring data, display trends and calculate over dimensional cost in your cables. The ultrasonic cable quality monitor (previously marketed and sold by IPEC Limited under the UltraSense brandname) has been the subject of a two-year, highly successful technology improvement programme by Acuity Products. industry solutions in advisory discussions and live presentations. Primarily small and medium-sized companies, but also large enterprises with several international production locations, can pro t from a fully integrated length-based system design and secure sustainable competitive advantages from Advaris’ complete package in its modular concept. Besides many new software functions for cable design, manufacturing, quality control and warehouse management, Advaris will, for the rst time, be presenting a solution for integrated maintenance management. The aim of the new module is to maximise technical plant availability in cable manufacturing, which will lead to signi cant competitive advantages. The proactive maintenance of machinery will be automatically included in production planning, with maintenance intervals determined by time or condition. Failures in production plants can be automatically identi ed, classi ed and, when required, the maintenance personnel noti ed by a system warning (alarm) or by text messaging. All information required for the repair, such as the availability of spare parts, technical manuals and the complete maintenance history of the plant will be available directly at the machine terminal at the press of a key. The result will be the minimising of machine downtimes and repair times (MTBF/MTTR). The impact of a machine fault on the ability to meet deadlines for production orders is indicated immediately in the nite planning. By using new in-memory technologies, the Manufacturing Execution System (MES) from Advaris can update the production plan in just a few seconds. The new technology also enables event-driven real-time optimisation of planning for individual lengths and drums in the production department. ▲ Real-time optimisation of individual lengths for speci c machines and drum capacities for minimising machine set-up times and avoiding waste lengths
