Industry Capability Building Protect and Enhance a Skilled Workforce

ONGOING Science-Based Educational Projects Cal Poly Industry Short Courses and Symposium

The short courses and symposium provide cost-effective training for industry professionals to maintain and improve skills and capabilities post-farm gate for the California dairy industry. Short courses this year include: Introduction to Artisanal Cheese Making, Introductory Cultured Dairy Products Manufacture, and Introductory Ice Cream Manufacture. Ongoing since 1990. Dairy Ingredients Symposium (DIS): February 26 - 28, 2018 , 20th Annual DIS Supported by CDRF funding and managed by Dr. David Everett and his team at Cal Poly, this annual symposium is now in its 20th year. The Dairy Ingredients Symposium is designed for industry and academic researchers, marketers, product developers, and manufacturers. The latest techno- logical developments, tailored dairy ingredients, dairy industry trends, market opportunities, and new This 12-month fellowship project is designed to train ‘Master of Science’ students in dairy feeding systems, nutrient management, and the feed industry so they become qualified personnel that promote a sustainable and environmentally friendly dairy industry. During the fellowship, graduate students conduct an on-farm research project, and partner as an intern with feed manufacturers, feed companies, and nutrition consultants to gain understanding of dairy feeding systems. Fellows accepted to this project have already made lasting contributions to the industry. One fellow reorganized the quality control at a feed mill, resulting in the mill saving 1–2 work days of labor per month. Another is continuing in the field, working to develop a commercial assay to identify heifers during the pre-wean period that will not produce or survive.
