USD's legendary head coachJohn ''.J.C." Cunninghamwill be the recipient ofthe 2005 Lefty Gomez Award, one ofthe most prestigious awards in all ofamateur baseball Former USO men·s baseba ll coach Joh n Cunningham , who di- rected the Toreros· program between 1964-98, was inducted into the Chet and Ma rguerite Pagni Family Ath letic Hall of Fame in October of 2003. The 1998 season was long-time University of Sa n Diego head baseba ll coach John "'j.C. '. Cunningham·s 35th and final year at the hel m of the USO basebal l program. Since then Cu nningham has remained involved with the USO athletic department as its Direc- tor of Transportation. Cunningham began his USO career back in 1962 when he was hi red to be head coach of the freshman basketball team, assistant va rsity basketba ll coach, and director of intramural activities. In 1963 he assisted baseball coach Mike Morrow, who was in his final season, and in 1964 Cunningham was promoted to head baseba ll coach. Cunningham, who finished with a career record o f 843-839-18 (1964-1998), led the Toreros to sixteen winning seasons, including two World Series appea rances in 1971 and 1978. His 843 career victories ranks him in the top forty in all-time victories among Division I coaches. His teams won thi rty or more games seven times C-71 , '78, '79, ·so, ·s1, ·37 and '93), with four of his squads advancing to post-season pla y. His 1971 and 1978 squads won regional titles and adva nced to the Division II College World Se- ries, while his 1976 and 1966 squads advanced to regional play. He was named District Vlll Coach of the Year in 1971. In 1979, the Toreros moved into the Division I ranks and in his first year at that level, Cunningham guided the Toreros to a 32-19- 1 record and fourth place finish in the Southern Ca lifornia Base- ball Association. In 1985, USO joined the West Coast Conference and over the next 14 yea rs in the league, Cunningham won 343 games. In 1993, he was named West Coast Conference Co-Coach of the Year after guiding the Toreros to a team record 36 wins 09- 11 WCC). During pans of that '93 campaign the Toreros earned national rankings as high as 17th (Collegiate Baseball), 22nd (Baseball Amen:ca) and 25th (USA Today). He still owns the school record for WCC wins in a season when his 1996 squad finished 21-7 in league play.
