What are Allergies?

Allergies, also called allergic rhinitis, is a condition when your immune system overreacts to particles in the air that you breathe – meaning you are allergic to them. Your immune system attacks the particles (called allergens) that invade your body, causing the release of chemicals that lead to symptoms such as sneezing and a runny nose. Immune System  Your immune system is the body’s natural defense system made up of special cells, proteins, tissues, and organs that helps you fight off foreign invaders like bacteria, yeast, and viruses.  If your body experiences a virus such as chicken pox then it can produce antibodies that will recognize chicken pox if it ever appears again.  This “adaptive” type response is a special part of your immune system.  Cat dander and pollen are not a threat to your health but in a person who has an altered immune response, an irritated adaptive immune
