Two ofthe twenty-one USD inductees to the Chet andMarguerite Pagni Family Athletic Hall ofFame p layedfootball for the USD Toreros. Jan Chapman, Class of 1961, was inducted in 1995. Matt Maslowski, Class of 1971, was inducted in 2001. Jan Chapman was a three-sport letter winner at the Uni versity of San Diego, but it was foot ball where he made a name fo r himself. His three-year totals as quarterback included 2,573 yards and 23 touchdowns on I 88-for-367 pass ing. His senior year was hi s best when he completed 85-fo r-1 67 passes foe 1,087 yards and 9 TD's, ranking him 23 rd in the nation. Also as a punter, he ranked 3 rd in the nati on hi s sophomore year (43.8 yards per punt) and 6 th in his senior campaign (43.2). He is the current USD season record holder fo r yards punted (2,287) and average (43.8). Chapman is still remembered for leading USD to a 2 1-20 upset over the Mari ne Corp Recruiting Depot which touted fo ur future NFL stars. Chapman's leadership abilities were demonstrated on the fi eld as well as on campus. As co-captain for football hi s senior year, he received the Gil Kuhn Trophy as the Outstanding Gridder, given to the player that best demonstrated sportsmanship, per– formance in the highest degree, and leadership. He was also pres ident of the Assoc iated Student Body hi s senior year. Since graduating in 196 1, Jan has stayed in the San Diego area, giving back to the community by teaching and coaching at the high school and community co llege levels. Matt Maslowski, after playing football at Mission Bay Hi gh Schoo l and Mesa Community Co llege in San Diego, decided to continue his career at USD. At 6'3" and 205 lbs., Matt dominated as a receiver for the Toreros. During hi s first season, he was the leading club football receiver in the nation with 42 catches for 799 yards in onl y seven games. His coll egiate career was cut short in 1970 due to injury, but he still managed some remarkable numbers during his career. Playing in only 11 games for USD, Matt had 80 catches fo r 1,552 yards and 18 touchdowns. He averaged a remarkable 19 .4 yards per catch fo r the Toreros. Because of hi s size and speed, Matt was offered a free agent contract by the Los Angeles Rams and played for George All en and Tommy Prothro. In addition to the Rams, Matt pl ayed fo r the Chicago Bears, Minnesota Vikings and fi ni shed his career with the Florida Blazers of the World Football League. At the request of a group of students in 1969, the University of San Diego agreed to bring football back eight years after dropping the sport. Under Coach Jim Gray, they started a cl ub program. Matt and his teammates from the club football team laid the fo undati on for a so lid football program still going strong.
