Professional Self Regulation

Professional Self Regulation (PSR) Advisor - Joanna Shorland

Hi everyone , I am happy to be starting at Speech Pathology Australia in the new PSR Advisor position. My background is in adult speech pathology. I have worked primarily in the inpatient aged care and neurological rehabilitation settings. My professional interests include impairment based aphasia therapy, management of cognitive-linguistic difficulties and the role of speech pathologists in the areas of dementia and delirium management. I have lived in Melbourne for some time; however, I am originally from New Zealand. I am excited about working in this new role with the Speech Pathology Australia (SPA) team at National Office. In order for SPA to be able to offer assurance to peers, consumers and employers that speech pathologists participating in PSR with Certified Practising Speech Pathologist (CPSP) status are meeting the requirements of the program, SPA needs an audit process. As the PSR advisor I will be responsible for conducting random audits to confirm that information supplied on declaration forms by members is correct and complete. I am also available to assist you with your PSR related enquiries, such as questions around PSR activities. I look forward to working with you all. Please feel free to contact me should you have any questions around the PSR process. psr@speechpathologyaustralia.org.au

Certified Practising Speech Pathologist Clarification on speech pathology internal meetings

Information on PSR activities continues to be reviewed in response to member feedback. During the renewal period and with audits commencing, we have been communicating with a number of members about activities. As a result of this, we realise that there is lack of clarity about where speech pathology staff/department meetings fit into PSR and we are aiming to redress this by changes to the PSR Activities information to follow: • Speech pathology staff/department meetings can be counted where they are relevant to professional practice as a speech pathologist, involve professional development and result in an extension of knowledge and skills. These meetings count for attendance at workshops and SIGs (W/S) = 1 point per hour of attendance. • Speech pathology meetings within a department

that involve professional supervision and/or mentoring in a one-on-one setting, or a small group of 2 - 3 speech pathologists, count in mentoring, peer support, clinical supervision (M) = 1 point per hour • Staff meetings, or sections thereof, that are related to administration or “general business” as part of the process of speech pathology work rather than specific PD do not meet the above criteria and cannot be counted. For further information, please feel free to contact National Office on 1300 368 835 or email office@ speechpathologyaustralia.org.au Sharon Crane Senior Advisor Professional Education and Certification (CPD & PSR) and Joanna Shorland Professional Self Regulation (PSR)Advisor
