Success at SA Expo

south Australia

SA 515 Members as at April 2016

The beginning of April was a very busy time for the community awareness working group as the South Australian branch participated in the Pregnancy, Babies and Children’s expo held in April. The expo was held at the Wayville Showgrounds and consisted of over 200 exhibitors. The Speech Pathology Australia stall aimed to to promote speech pathology amongst the SA paediatric community and their families, and that it did! Over the three days we were able to engage over 500 members of the public, with 420 of these completing a survey to then enter the draw to win a pack of books. Many participants commented that they were not aware the speech pathology profession was so diverse and were interested to learn more/have their questions answered in regards to their own children, grand children, extended family, family friends’ children and children they work with (for example, child care workers).

Fact sheets from the SPA website, as well as 150 bubble packs were distributed to families who engaged with our stall. This pack included a small container of bubbles and a bubble wand, along with a handout with practical ideas about how to develop your child’s language using bubbles aimed at different developmental levels (e.g. non verbal, 1 - 2 word phrases, sentences). The event was a huge success and we have received really positive feedback from members of the public, volunteers and expo coordinators about the presentation of our stall and the friendliness and professionalism of our volunteers. A special thank you to the speech pathologists and speech pathology students who volunteered their time during the three day expo to help make the event such a success. Josephine Kemp
