International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative update

The International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative (IDDSI) is still operating at an awareness stage and is not ready for adoption or implementation at the present time. The Australian Standardized Terminology and Definitions for Texture Modified Foods and Fluids (2007) are still current in Australia, and are the standards to be used by Australian speech pathologists in clinical work. The IDDSI framework was discussed at the recent SPA Board of Directors meeting, and a decision made to provide in principle support for the international framework at this time. SPA is considering the actions and decisions by other professional associations, here and internationally, and will hold further discussions regarding the implementation plan with all key stakeholders prior to determining full endorsement of the framework. Dr Julie Cichero (co-chair of the IDDSI committee) presented at the National Conference on the development of the international framework, feedback from international stakeholders, and provided a comparison with the current Australian standards.
