ARTS - VISUAL ART

Subject Summary: The Year 9 Visual Art programme is designed to expose students to a range of Fine Art, Craft and Functional Design fields, building on study from Years 6, 7 and 8. Over the programme, students will work in a number of different media areas. They will learn about the work of a number of artists and designers from a range of art and design movements working in a variety of art and design fields. As well as providing career opportunities, an appreciation of art and design can enhance the lives of students in a number of ways. As a result of undertaking the Visual Art programme in Year 9 students will: • Continue to create and display their own artworks, with confidence and individuality. • Be able to recognise and value the aesthetic qualities of good art and design. • Be able to define and solve problems with the flexibility to negotiate and creatively consider a variety of solutions and processes. Above all else, the Year 9 Visual Art programme seeks to encourage positive experiences that extend imaginative awareness, discrimination and decision making.

Assessment Outline: The students are assessed throughout the programme according to the following criteria: • Criterion A: Knowing and Understanding (maximum 8 marks) • Criterion B: Developing Skills (maximum 8 marks) • Criterion C: Thinking Creatively (maximum 8 marks) • Criterion D: Responding (maximum 8 marks) Each semester students will be required to complete the following assessment tasks: • Written task, such as a Unit Test or Research Assignment. • A series of practical pieces culminating in the creation of one main resolved piece. • A written analysis/evaluation of their completed practical work. • A Process Journal.

Subject Outline by Semester: YEAR 9 - SEMESTER ONE TOPICS: • Modernism Illustration and Painting Unit:

Looking at the influence of the various Modernist Art Movements including Impressionism, Post Impressionism, Expressionism, Fauvism and Surrealism. Using these stylistic influences to express a social and/or mental health issue through illustration and painting. YEAR 9 - SEMESTER TWO TOPICS: • Popular Culture Printing Unit : Looking at the influence of the Pop Art and Op Art Movements. Using these stylistic influences to reflect popular and social media culture through a print making medium.
