Year 9 Subject Selection Guide 2020

Subject Outline by Semester: YEAR 9 - SEMESTER ONE TOPIC: Unit Two: Java – 2D Game Development • Key Concept: Systems • Related Concepts: Function, Resources, Perspective • Global Context: Globalisation and Sustainable Development

We present ourselves and our viewpoints via digital means to attract and influence a broad and global audience. “Gaming” allows people to use digital tools to communicate, through simulation, important messages about our future. Students will create an engaging 2-Dimensional game using Greenfoot.org tools that informs and compels young children (Year 6 students) to take action about an issue related to one of the United Nation Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG). The game needs to be created using Greenfoot and show an understanding of structured programming and object-oriented programming. Students will research, design and develop their game mechanics and narrative and evaluate and collect feedback in an agile manner to improve their end product. YEAR 9 - SEMESTER TWO TOPIC: • Unit One: Introduction to Robotics • Key Concept: Development • Related Concepts: Function, Invention, Market and Trends • Global Context: Scientific and Technical Innovation Develop a robot prototype of an existing real-world robotic implementation. What is the difference between a robot and a human? What is artificial intelligence? Should driverless cars be legal in Australia? Understanding the purpose of robots and their application. Critiquing the social and ethical basis for the principles outlined in Asimov’s three laws of robotics. Investigate the various uses of robots in areas such as our daily life, in manufacturing, in science and the military.
