Year 9 Subject Selection Guide 2020

Subject Outline by Semester: YEAR 9 – SEMESTER ONE: • Unit One: Save the Bees

• Key Concept: Development • Related Concepts: Function and Sustainability • Global Context: Globalisation and Sustainability The Design Challenge for Unit 1 requires students to design and make a native bee habitat that will be placed in the gardens surrounding the College. During this unit, students become familiar with the Design Cycle, having the opportunity to develop iterative designs through the development of model prototypes. Students also learn about the importance of sustainability, our roles and responsibility as global citizens to support the sustainability of these wonderful creatures which pollinate our crops. Using information gathered through primary and secondary research, each student individually designs and makes an effective habitat for Australian native bees. These are constructed in the workshop using wood working tools and machinery, finished with appropriate coatings and installed in the gardens around the College. YEAR 9 - SEMESTER TWO: • Unit Two: Laser Cutting – Light Box • Key Concept: Communities • Related Concepts: Adaptation and Function • Global Context: Identities and Relationships During this unit students will explore how various communities identify themselves and inquire into the relationships between its members. Students will inquire into the statement "Community characteristics influence the adaptation of functional design” presenting their findings whilst following the Design Cycle. Students will design and make a functioning light box which adapts its design from a market and/or trend of a community that they have identified and inquired into. Students will expand on their woodworking skills they have developed during the previous unit, as well as developing new skills around laser cutting and creating suitable designs in Adobe Illustrator.
