BUSINESS AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP Subject Summary:

This elective is offered in the final two years of the MYP programme. It is suitable to students who would like to gain a broad understanding of business management and entrepreneurship as it applies to individuals and societies. This subject is designed using the principles of Problem Based Learning. In lessons, students will solve marketing, human resource and financial management problems encountered by domestic and international businesses. The course is divided into two units which offer preparatory studies towards Year 10 Business and then into Year 11 and 12 Business. Students studying Year 9 Business and Entrepreneurship will have the opportunity to own and operate a real business at the Somerset Celebration of Entrepreneurship in October. Assessment Outline: During the year students will be required to produce two projects which focus on the concepts of change, innovation, ethics, systems, competition, strategy and processes. For each of these projects students will inquire and analyse, develop ideas, create solutions and evaluate. The two projects completed are: • Assignment 1: Developing a new product suitable for sale at the Somerset Celebration of Entrepreneurship. (Criteria A, B, C, D) • Assignment 2: Selling and marketing a new product to real customers at the Somerset Celebration of Entrepreneurship. (Criteria A, B, C, D) The criteria used for assessment are: • Criterion A: Knowing and Understanding, • Criterion B: Investigating,

• Criterion C: Communicating and • Criterion D: Thinking Critically

Subject Outline by Project: YEAR 9 TOPICS: • Assignment One:

Students will create and test a prototype product to be sold at a market stall • Assignment Two:

Students will create an advertisement for a market stall at the Somerset Celebration of Entrepreneurship using a suitable publishing application. Students will design and run a market stall at the Somerset Celebration of Entrepreneurship and evaluate their success using financial management systems. YEAR 10 TOPICS: • Assignment One: Students will develop a piece of marketing communication to promote an educational tour to the United States for a specific target market. This will involve using MS PowerPoint or other presentation techniques. • Assignment Two: Students will develop their own business idea – free choice. If students choose, they can commence operating this new business with real customers. In all semesters students are encouraged to develop a wide variety of research skills and to become independent learners.
