Self-Esteem & Self-Worth Workbook
STAYING SAFE WHILE ON SOCIAL MEDIA
Tips & Tricks to keep you safe while online and using applications
Use strong and unique passwords: I know that 1234 or ABCD! are both easy to remember, but they are also both easy to guess. Create strong passwords that are difficult for others to guess. Avoid using common passwords or personal information. It's also important to use a different password for each social media account you have to prevent a single breach from affecting multiple accounts. Enable two-factor authentication: I know it can be irritating to jump multiple hoops while logging in but, Enabling two-factor authentication whenever possible adds an extra layer of security by requiring a second form of verification, such as a code sent to your mobile device, in addition to your password. Be mindful of the information you share: Think before you share personal information on social media. Are you going on a trip, getting a new job, or moving? Consider your followers and safety in every post! Only share information that you are comfortable with the public potentially seeing. Adjust privacy settings: Familiarize yourself with the privacy settings of each social media platform you use. Some will have privacy settings nearly screaming in your face while others are tucked away! Take the time to review and customize your privacy settings to control who can see your posts, photos, and personal information. Be cautious about accepting friend/follower requests: You may think you know someone by their profile picture, but that may not be true! Be selective about who you accept as friends or followers on social media. Only connect with people you know and trust in real life. Be wary of suspicious accounts or people you don't recognize. Avoid oversharing: Be mindful of what you post on social media. Avoid sharing sensitive information such as your current location, travel plans, or daily routines, as this information can be used against you. It's better to post when you are back safely! Be skeptical of links and attachments: Just because a link or image can be clicked doesn't mean it should! Be cautious when clicking links or downloading attachments, even if they come from someone you know. Phishing attacks and malware can spread through social media platforms rapidly and unknowingly. Verify the source and validity of links before clicking on them. Report and block abusive or inappropriate behavior: If you encounter harassment, bullying, or any form of abusive or inappropriate behavior on social media, report it to the support team. Protect others while protecting yourself. Regularly review your accounts and activity: Take the time to review your social media accounts periodically. Remove any old posts that are irrelevant or that you no longer want to be public, especially when considering a job interview! Stay updated on security measures and privacy policies: Keep yourself informed about the latest security measures and privacy policies of the social media platforms you use. They often change with little notice, so be cautious.
