Letter from the President

Dear Safety Manager,

At HexArmor, we believe safety is not a luxury, it is a necessity. Safety involves more than simply protecting contractors from danger. It takes a commitment to anticipating the unthinkable. Born out of hard-earned experiences and firsthand knowledge, HexArmor PPE solutions are the direct result of input and insights gained from contractors on the front lines putting themselves in harm’s way every day. HexArmor has become the industry leader by working directly with safety managers and the workers they protect. This allows us to customize and constantly improve our PPE solutions in response to real-world hazards, as opposed to one-size-fits-all, off-the-shelf products. So, what impact can HexArmor PPE make? How can safety be measured? At the end of each shift the only number we care about is zero. Zero injuries on the construction site. Zero days lost. Zero kid’s games missed and zero worried spouses. To us, that little zero means everything, and it’s what drives us to continue to be the best.

Sincerely,

Steve Van Ermen Founder and CEO

Danger at Every Turn. Protection for Every Contractor. Pinch points on scaffolding. Rough edges on sheet metal and lumber. Slippery grips on tools. There are countless hazards on the construction site, whether rigging a load, tying rebar or simply walking through the work area. These hazards lead to cuts, punctures and broken bones from impacts. HexArmor develops PPE solutions that work hard for hardworking contractors. With a lineup of PPE equipment designed specifically for construction applications, HexArmor’s purpose-built, application-specific safety solutions will fit your crew like a glove. Developing the right fit for workers goes way beyond the industry, it comes down to the individual and the job they perform.

The High Cost of Low-Quality PPE Beyond the physical and emotional pain caused by injuries, safety managers must calculate the total costs of a workplace injury. There are numerous indirect costs of injuries that can have ten times the economic impact of the direct costs.

TIME-RELATED COSTS • Overtime costs necessitated by the injury • Additional administrative time for supervisors, safety personnel and clerical workers • Time spent investigating and reporting the accident • Time spent addressing production problems and training replacement workers PRODUCTIVITY COSTS • Production output lost by the worker,

MATERIAL/EQUIPMENT DAMAGES • The cost of replacing damaged equipment • Rental equipment costs, if damaged equipment needs repairs

• Material or product damage leads to lost potential sales

MORALE/REPUTATION • Intangible, unquantifiable costs that must be taken into account • Poor worker morale leads to decreased production and increased turnover rates • Damage to your reputation with customers can lead to business losses • Loss of public goodwill from bad publicity

those assisting and onlookers • Reduced productivity from the injured worker upon return • Reduced productivity by the replacement for the injured worker

HexArmor Elite ® products have a secret weapon against cut hazards that no other glove can boast. SuperFabric ® brand material is a proprietary technology designed to prevent lacerations and slashes from reaching the skin. Sheet metal, rebar, splinters from wooden beams, glass windows, metal jacketing, broken pipes and burrs on pipe ends are no match for SuperFabric. A Cut Above

Next “Level” Cut Protection Not all “Cut 5” gloves are cut from the same cloth. In fact, many gloves marketed as level 5 cut resistance are only CE level 5, and do not meet the more stringent ISEA level 5 standards. HexArmor level 5 gloves meet or exceed the highest current testing levels for both ANSI/ISEA and CE, proving that our PPE solutions offer the best possible protection from hazards on the construction site. When you want superior cut protection, you need HexArmor gloves with SuperFabric.

Puncture Resistance MANY LACERATIONS BEGIN WITH A PUNCTURE

Standard Synthetic Leather Gloves

Outer Shell

A glove with excellent cut protection often lacks adequate puncture protection, which is the number one cause of cuts. In fact, almost all lacerations begin with a puncture. Sharp hazards found on construction sites such as wood slivers and metal wires poke through the glove, then drag across the hand and rip through the material and the skin. Common cut resistant materials such as Dyneema or Kevlar provide some protection from straight-edged hazards, but they can be easily pierced because of the knit properties of the material. HexArmor puncture-resistant technology relies on patented SuperFabric ® guard plates to stop hazards and prevent injuries. All puncture-resistant HexArmor gloves are put to the test in the lab and on the construction site. Using real feedback from the contractors relying on the gloves, the designs have been improved to increase the protection in certain high-risk areas, such as the area between the thumb and forefinger.

Abrasion Resistance PROTECT YOUR HANDS AND YOUR INVESTMENT

Abrasions are a constant hazard on the construction site, whether from rough edges on plywood, circular sanders or any other material that rubs and wears down typical gloves. Effective abrasion resistance also helps prolong the life of the gloves, which increases the total return on investment. Anyone who has thrown away a perfectly good glove because of a worn fingertip or palm pad understands the value of abrasion resistance, beyond the injury prevention.

HexArmor builds superior abrasion resistance into our glove lines. After researching and observing the ways in which contractors perform various tasks, we doubled up the protection in very specific areas and ways. Our SuperFabric is designed for cut and puncture resistance, but it naturally delivers incredible abrasion resistance as well. We add patches of additional fabric to the areas exposed to scrapes and excessive wearing, such as the fingertips and the area between the thumb and forefinger. This keeps

workers safer, while extending the glove life. Impact Resistance POSITIVELY IMPACT OVERALL SAFETY Impacts come in all forms, shapes and sizes on the construction site. Whether caused by falling tools or equipment or pinches, all impact injuries have one thing in common: unpredictability. Workers must always be prepared and protected from impacts and pinch points, and HexArmor’s patented IR-X ® Impact Exoskeleton™ is proven to reduce the number and effects of injuries. The goal is always to decrease the impact on the hand. HexArmor gloves are designed to absorb and redistribute the energy away from the knuckles and bones during an impact. HexArmor tests the effectiveness of our own PPE materials as well as the leading competitive brands, and our products lessen the force of an impact to a much greater degree than anything else on the market.

Why Dexterity Matters

BETTER DEXTERITY IS THE BEST PROTECTION

Gloves and other PPE are designed to protect workers from a wide variety of hazards and workplace dangers. It is estimated that simply wearing gloves reduces the risk of hand injury for construction workers by as much as 60 percent. However, it’s impossible to protect workers who refuse to wear their PPE. So why doesn’t everyone wear safety gloves at all times on the job site? Too many brands are designed to be bulky and uncomfortable. The lesson is simple. You can offer the highest cut, puncture and abrasion resistance, but if workers lose so much dexterity that they can’t adequately do their jobs, the glove is useless. HexArmor focuses on high dexterity first and foremost when designing gloves. This has led to developments in glove technology and material innovations that vastly increase the dexterity without reducing the levels of protection. Our proprietary technology is designed to offer higher cut and puncture protection in a thinner, more flexible fabric. We test all of our gloves in real-world environments and applications to ensure that workers are not only protected, but able to continue to do their jobs. With HexArmor high dexterity solutions, there is no reason to ever go without the best protection available.

Grip Technology

A GRIP FOR ALL TRADES In the construction industry, getting a sure grip on tools and equipment can be challenging. HexArmor gloves are designed to encourage a firm grasp for contractors on a variety of materials and under virtually any condition.

MUD GRIP

LEATHER

Synthetic leather palm with PVC dots provides a solid overall grip, especially in wet conditions. The PVC dots channel away lubricants, create friction and improve grip on saturated tools.

Leather palm provides an excellent all-around grip in a variety of conditions. In addition to providing an outstanding grip, leather also naturally provides resistance to abrasions and punctures.

SANDY NITRILE DIP

TP-X ®

Maintain a sure grip in wet or dry environments, even when working with saturated oils and muds, which can make other palm grips slippery.

TP-X ® palm material excels in oils and fluids because it does not absorb liquids. This makes it ideal for maintaining grip in oily or wet conditions, when lesser gloves would fail.

SYNTHETIC LEATHER

TP-X+ ®

Synthetic leather palm with larger PVC pattern that create friction and improve grip on metal tools. Good all-around grip for general contracting tasks.

This advanced material is not flat like TP-X; it features grooves in the surface that enhance grip over time. A more robust, heavy-duty alternative, the TP-X+ palm provides increased cut, puncture and abrasion resistance, and may provide heat resistance as well.

SILICONE GRIP

Durable synthetic leather palm with heat-resistant hi-vis silicone pattern delivers maximum grip and dexterity.

Steel Shim Maintenance

WORKING WITH STEEL SHIMS FOR PUMP MAINTENANCE Contractors performing maintenance duties on pumps, motors, turbines and machines regularly use stainless steel slotted shims to level and maintain this equipment. These steel shims create a dangerous hazard for a worker’s hands and are always present, because pump and machine maintenance is an ongoing process that requires constant attention and a significant amount of time handling these shims. While a slotted shim can be a contractor’s best friend when working with pumps, the sharp tabs and corners are dangerous hazards that can cause serious injury. The often paper-thin edges of stainless steel shims can be razor sharp, and easily slice through ordinary leather maintenance gloves, Kevlar ® or cotton work gloves. HexArmor ® interviewed a refinery maintenance worker who received several different injuries working with steel shims, including multiple lacerations to his thumb and index finger and smash injuries to his knuckles. One injury required stitches, and due to the location of the wound, he was off the job for two weeks. After these costly incidents, the safety team began looking for a better hand protection solution. MAINTENANCE WORKER HAS MULTIPLE INJURIES WORKING WITH SHIMS

HEXARMOR ® PROVIDES CRUCIAL PROTECTION FROM RAZOR SHARP SHIM EDGES

After consulting the injured worker and his crew and examining the hazards present on their job site, HexArmor provided him a pair of Chrome Series ® 4026 mechanic’s gloves. As soon as the worker returned to work, he received an almost identical type of cut from the shim while performing routine maintenance using a metal shim. The sharp edge of the shim slashed the exterior synthetic leather covering the finger and palm of the glove. However, this time he was protected by the extra layer of SuperFabric ® brand material underneath, and was uninjured. HexArmor ® products made with SuperFabric ® brand material exceed ANSI/ISEA and CE Level 5 cut protection, which played a huge role in saving this worker’s finger. This worker continued to use the same HexArmor gloves for weeks after the incident, claiming, “They were just as good as ever.”

“With everything else we tried, maybe 40% of the guys would like one glove, and 30% preferred another. But when we started using the HexArmor gloves, 98% of the guys gave positive feedback. The overwhelmingly positive response from workers has been our biggest satisfaction thus far.” – Safety Manager, Alberta, Canada

How to Properly Care for Your Gloves

Improper glove care can shorten the life of your PPE. It can also lead to dermatitis, decreased dexterity, loss of protective abilities and odor. Glove care refers not only to laundering, but also proper storage, routine glove checks and knowledge of materials and their particular strengths and weaknesses. Because there are so many different work gloves on the market, experienced safety managers should be aware of what workers’ gloves are made of and how they will stand up to the applications they’re being used for. Common glove materials include nylon, spandex, leather, cotton, SuperFabric ® , Kevlar ® , and knit fibers. Each of these materials has a certain way it needs to be cared for, and oftentimes there is a blending of the materials, making proper care even more crucial. Proper storage Gloves should be ideally stored in clean, dry conditions, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Routine glove checks Glove life varies depending on the application, environment and amount of use. Because of this, it is vital that you perform routine glove checks before beginning work every day. Take note of areas that have begun to wear down, such as loose Velcro ® or a worn-down name tag. If you see holes in the synthetic leather or TP-X ® material on the palm of your glove, this is an indication that its protective qualities may be compromised, putting you at risk of injury. Lingering moisture or a strong odor are also signs that your gloves may need to be replaced. Keeping an eye out for these issues and others keeps you one step further from a worksite hand injury, which is the ultimate goal of hand protection in the first place. Care and content

• Gloves marked “wash with care” are machine washable. The number inside the symbol denotes what temperature to wash the gloves at (e.g., machine wash with care at 30 degrees Celsius). Washing with care can be done by changing the machine cycle, using a different pre-set wash program (gentle/delicate), and being sure not to overload the washing machine. • When washing by hand it is important to use a soap and/or detergent that won’t irritate your skin. Also, be sure to wash gloves over a sink or outside, and rinse thoroughly. Companies that properly launder their gloves can increase lifespan by up to 300% Laundering removes harmful chemicals, perspiration, and everyday grit and grime that can weaken protective fibers and seams. Our team of HexArmor ® solutions specialists are here to help you with this process, and they are more than happy to provide you with all the information you need.

Our C&C tag, which indicates washing instructions and fiber content, is located on the inside cuff of all our gloves.

Put Your Gloves to the Test A glove trial is the process of field-testing different models of safety gloves, either from a single source or several manufacturers, in order to identify the best glove for a particular job. When done correctly, the benefits of a glove trial include: • Improved hand safety program and equipment, and reduced rate of hand injuries • Increased awareness of hand safety issues among workers • Higher rates of compliance with hand safety PPE requirements • Reduction in costs related to hand protection, through increased efficiency and durability of work gloves, or reduced insurance rates, medical costs and worker’s comp claims Because work conditions vary from one job to another, there is no way to tell how effective a particular safety glove will be without testing it in the field to see how it holds up, and protects against the actual hazards encountered in the workplace. Although a glove may have tested well in laboratory settings and been granted a high cut rating, it may lack abrasion resistance and break down quickly in the field. If a glove doesn’t offer the same level of protection at the end of the work day as it does at the beginning, then you need to consider another option. To ensure you avoid wasting time and energy on a poorly run glove trial, we have outlined a set of proven steps you can take in the glove trial process. These tips and recommendations come from over a decade of experience working with large industrial companies.
