FLOOD SAFETY TIPS

Floods can occur anywhere, with floodwaters rising gradually or flash floods striking suddenly. Flash floods are the number one weather-related killer in the United States — most flood fatalities happen because people try to drive through deadly waters rather than avoid them. (Source: Federal Emergency Management Agency, 2005)

Water's powerful force can easily overtake vehicles caught in a flood. Follow these tips to stay safe in your car during a flood.

How to Drive in a Flood

Pay attention to barricades. Don't ignore them by driving past them.

Do not drive through standing water on roads or in parking lots. The average automobile can be swept off the road in 12 inches of moving water, and roads covered by water are prone to collapse. Attempting to drive through water also may stall your engine, with the potential to cause irreparable damage if you try to restart the engine. If you come upon a flooded street, take an alternate route.

Take extra precautions if you're forced to drive through water.

 If no alternate route exists and you have no other reasonable alternative but to drive through standing water.  Do your best to estimate the depth of the water (if other cars are driving through, take note of how deep the water is).

 Drive slowly and steadily through the water.

 Avoid driving in water that downed electrical or power lines have fallen in — electric current pass- es through water easily.

 Watch for items traveling downstream — they can trap or crush you if you're in their path.

 If you have driven through water up to the wheel rims or higher, test your brakes on a clear patch of road at low speed. If they are wet and not stopping the vehicle as they should, dry them by pressing gently on the brake pedal with your left foot while maintaining speed with your right foot.

 Stay off the telephone unless you must report severe injuries.

 If your vehicle stalls in the deep water, you may need to restart the engine to make it to safety. Keep in mind that restarting may cause irreparable damage to the engine.  If you can't restart your vehicle and you become trapped in rising water, immediately abandon it for higher ground. Try to open the door or roll down the window to get out of the vehicle. If you are unable to get out safely, call 911 or get the attention of a passerby or someone standing on higher ground so that they may call for help.

SSC in the NFL

Joel Bitonio worked for SSC for 4 years at the University of Nevada while he was a full time student and a full time student athlete. Now, he stars as #75 in his third season with the Cleveland Browns. As expected, Joel was very strong and was in charge of lifting the heavy items while working for SSC. Managers and staff can not say enough good things about the hard work- ing student, complimenting on how he was always very punctual, polite, friendly, and always ready when as- signed a task or event.

We are proud that Compass Group has been named one of the “Top 50 Companies Changing the World.” Fortune Magazine publishes the list an- nually after a lengthy assess- ment process, including jour- nalistic investigation. Compa- nies are ranked on 3 criteria:

1. Measureable social impact

2. Business results

Now in his third season in the NFL Joel will be a leader for the young team that drafted 14 new players this spring. Look for Joel to start on the offensive line at left guard this fall and cheer on a former co-worker for all his hard work and dedication.

3. Degree of innovation

Fortune’s annual “Change the World” list is intended “to showcase the power of capi- talism to improve the human condition by identifying 50 companies that have made an important social or environ- mental impact through their profit-making strategy and op- erations.” This edition of For- tune will hit the newsstands in September. We are all part of the solution when it comes to creating a better world, and we at SSC thank you for the sustainable efforts you all practice to make an impact. Let’s all en- joy celebrating this great win for our company!

NATIONAL HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH Hispanic Heritage month occurs from September 15 to October 15. The obser- vation began in 1968 and celebrates the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. Sep- tember 15 is significant be- cause it is the independ- ence day of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Chile and Mexico cele- brate their independence days on September 18 and September 16, re- spectively. DIVERSITY AND IN- CLUSION ACTIVITY: During the week of Sep- tember 12, make a con- certed effort to be more aware of how you encour- age and acknowledge others. Think of a couple great ways to recognize others. If it’s not already part of what you do regu- larly, maybe it will be.

Grounds Tips for Your Home

Dates to Remember

Year End Inventory:

This time of year through October I get friends and family call- ing me and asking “what is this bug crawling on the side or into my house through open windows?” Well it’s the box elder bug. These bugs are commonly seen in large masses on tree trunks and the siding of buildings at this time of year. They do little damage to trees but will feed on the seeds. Many times these bugs try to migrate indoors, they are harmless and more of a nuisance. So don’t break out the pesticide arsenal, just enjoy nature unless they become that nuisance, then break out a means to remove them by collection or swatting them. If they are in your home a quick way to remove is with a vacuum hose.

Sept 12-16—Each site needs to conduct its Year End Inventory count this week and send it to your admin. Sept 26-30—The Knoxville Distribution Center will be closed. Nothing can be shipped out or received during this week. Sept 28th at Midnight— coding must be complet- ed for your MasterCard for August 25-Sept 24 trans- actions. Oct 3rd at 9am EST—All Stub period charges, Sept 25-Sept 30, for your Mas- terCard must be coded. MasterCards

Stretch those annual flowers into late fall: pinch spent buds and fertilize with a blossom producing liquid fertilizer like Peters Peat Lite special, high in phosphorus, low in Nitrogen. This will enhance flowering until frost sets. This is also a great time for cool season lawn owners to fertilize grass with a balanced fertilizer with a little iron mixed in. Cool season grasses are more actively growing now so it is also a great time to core aerate (no spike aerating please) and over- seed .

Employee Showcase “Yesterday evening at Meet The Teacher with big brother Cason and baby brother; I had my hands full. As we were leaving through the cafeteria, we noticed it was pour- ing down rain. One of the school's employees, I believe his name was Gambino, asked if I needed him to just keep an eye on my boys while I ran into the rain to pull my car around. I was so thankful for his gesture, but it didn't end there. I pulled my car around and with it so much closer I knew my kids would still get wet, but not nearly as wet. I pick up the baby as Cason runs to the car, while Gambino grabs an umbrella and insists on covering me and the baby as we go to the car, while I lean in the car to buckle him up, and while I get into the driver's seat. His kind gesture was so unexpected but so very appreciated, and I feel like he should be rec- ognized for this so I wanted to contact you. You should be proud to have employees like him working for the school. —Megan”
