Induction to anneal weld seams A COMPANY that manufactures venting solutions, and needed to update its induction equipment, has enlisted the applications laboratory at Ambrell to find a solution. The process involved heating a weld seam for an annealing application. The client used stainless steel and galvanised steel tubes for this application. Application engineers determined that an Ambrell Easyheat 4.2 kW, 150-400 kHz induction heating system was the right solution based on the application requirements. The engineers also built a custom-designed single-position coil. A piece of ceramic was secured to the bottom of the coil to ensure consistent positioning, and temperature indicating paint was applied to the part. Heating both the galvanised and stainless steel tubes took six seconds. However, testing revealed that the annealing temperature was 704°C (1,300°F) for galvanised, but 538°C (1,000°F) for stainless. The galvanised tubes had very little discoloration from the heating, whereas the stainless steel tubes showed slightly more discoloration. Induction proved to be the optimal heating method for this application for several reasons. The heating takes just seconds, which can result in additional throughput for the client. In this case the system was being integrated into a material handling system and the induction system’s modest footprint was beneficial. Finally, induction is consistent so the client will get the same result each time.
