Another Choice

And without this perception, which is at the same time an emotion and a sense, it is now as if one was suspended in emptiness and absence, even though one may be occupied with the most brilliant discourse or the noblest affections.

Indeed one has now understood that neither the highest intelligence nor the most rigorous ethics or the most wholesome deeds are ever sufficiently trustworthy or infallible for one to be able to submit and surrender, as one now does before this Consciousness that stands over one and traverses one and sometimes fulfills. And most of all one now knows that none of these modes of existence, none of these fields of expression, none of these instruments, is gifted with the knowledge and power necessary to accede to a future of conscious unity upon earth, in matter.

From now on, the authority to which one wishes to refer in everything, even though the required sincerity may still be lacking, manifests itself through this Presence and this Axis of consciousness and action.
