U11 Girls' Hockey Festival 2019

St Edward’s took its first female pupils in 1982, going on to become fully co-educational in 1997. Now, more than 20 years later, St Edward’s is fast approaching being 50-50 in boys and girls numbers, and has already achieved a proud history of girls’ sports. Below are just some of the girls’ sporting highlights at St Edward’s from the last 37 years. HISTORY OF GIRLS’ SPORTS AT ST EDWARD’S

1982 Penelope Brown (nee Burke) is the first female pupil at the School and goes on to row in the Bristol University VIII, 1985-87. 1985 Emma Marshall (nee Bigland) captains the first ladies rowing IV, winning a Rep Tie. They enter the Avon Regatta, winning the Women’s Novice IV event. 1986 The first girls’ hockey side is formed. Captained by Helen Cook, they beat Wellington and Cheltenham Ladies in their very first season. 1987 The first girls’ VIII competes in and wins their class at the National Schools Regatta.

1994 Charlotte Harris and Catherine Wilson have an unbeaten tennis season, reaching the final of the Harpenden Ladies Annual Doubles School Championship. Charlotte Harris later becomes the first winner of an Oxford Blue in tennis from St Edward’s. 1995 1st VI squash team goes unbeaten. 1996 1st VIII win their event at the Marlow Regatta and finish seventh at the Women’s National Head of the River. 1998 Katrina Head wins all three ski titles in her age group at the British Land National Children’s Ski Championships. 2001 1st XI win the County U18 Hockey Championships for the first time.
