GOLF TIP OF THE MONTH PAGE 10 AROUND THE BEND March 2019 Ron Nutty, PGA Head Golf Professional Pre Round Stretching will improve your game and keep you playing longer! Golfers are at risk for a variety of injuries, particularly as age sets in and joints and muscles stiffen. Many of these injuries involve the back, hips and legs. Fortunately, many of these tweaks and ailments can be averted by adhering to a stretching regimen before swinging a club. These stretches will keep the body loose, lowering the risk of injury and benefiting players on the course. Practice Swinging Slowly To stretch out the back before a round, simply rotate the shoulders and hips to about the same degree as in a backswing, doing so slowly in the early stages with a club to help loosen the muscles. Make sure to keep the spine vertical during follow-through to avoid hyperextension. Repeat as needed until the back feels loose. This stretch loosens the back, making the body more able to pivot during the swing, decreasing the chance of injury and increasing the chances of a quality shot. Reaching Lateral Side Stretch To complete this stretch, stand with feet shoulder-width apart, then slowly bend to one side while reaching over your head with the hand. From there, return to the middle and bend the other way, making sure not to bend forward. Repeat as needed. Stretching the sides is vital to a golf swing because of the amount of movement and torquing of the body during a swing. This stretch lowers the risk of a pulled muscle or other tweaks that can be experienced during a swing. Reaching Down Triceps Stretch To complete this stretch, reach behind the head with both hands and the elbows pointing upward. Then, reach down the back with the hands and return to center. Repeat until the arms feel loose and relaxed. The triceps help generate speed in a golf swing; keeping them loose and flexible is vital to a fluid swing and quality shots off the teebox or fairway. Customizing a Racquet to Improve Your Game

Over the last twenty years there has been a trend in the tennis industry which suggests that lighter racquets are better. These racquets are being marketed as easier to swing and better for the arm. However, research has demonstrated that this is far from the truth. In reality, a light racquet forces a player to swing harder in order to generate power, they provide little control, and are not very stable (shaky) on contact. Light racquets are categorized as any racquet under 295 grams or 10.4 ounces. They usually consist of a wider beam which makes the racquet frame stiffer, thus offering more power and less ball feel. A heavier racquet on the other hand consists of a thinner beam which means the frame has more flex, offering increased control and spin. In addition, customized appropriately, a heavier racquet can have as much or more power than the racquets the market considers as “powerful”. Professional tennis players do not use light racquets due to the higher risk of injury caused by the reasons mentioned above. Moreover, on the men’s tour the average weight of a racquet is 360g or 12.7 ounces and the women use a racquet that weighs on average 315-330 grams. Most players have their racquets customized with more weight in the grip and with some lead tape on the sides in order to have a head light racquet which is easier to swing. Even though the racquet on a scale weighs more, the added lead tape to the sides makes it significantly easier to swing and more stable on contact thus giving free power with little effort. An important feature to look for in a frame in order to prevent tennis elbow and other injuries is narrow beam which has a low vibration frequency. A racquet with a low vibration frequency means less shock with each shot that is hit going into the arm. A light racquet (under 10.6 ounces), causes a player to swing harder, generate spin, and power, which causes greater strain on the forearm/elbow area and the shoulder. Oversize racquet heads (above 105 sq. in) are usually light frames. While customizing a racquet takes some time in order to find the perfect balance for your game, it is very achievable and cost effective. Yes, change can be scary, but if you have a history of tennis related injuries such as wrist pain, tennis/golfers elbow, shoulder impingement, and/or rotator cuff issues you may want to look at changing the balance point of a racquet to where the weight is more in the handle than at the head. Proper technique will always be the number one prevention of injuries. A properly tailored racquet will go a long way to making tennis easier on the body while you continue to work on and improve your technique.

HBCC Swim Team is Back!

The Horseshoe Bend CC Mustangs are a summer league swim program associated with the Atlanta Swimming Association. Mustang summer swimming is a great way to learn about the sport and become involved in the Horseshoe Bend CC community.

Who can swim for the HBCC Mustangs? • Swimmers must be between the ages of 4 and 18 as of June 1, 2019. • The HBCC Swim Team is open to all HBCC families with swim privileges and in good standing. • The HBCC Mustang Swim Team is a club team in a recreational league. Swim Practices are held in order to help swimmers improve their strokes and learn new strokes. Swim team practice is not a time to teach basic swim lessons. The ratio of coaches to swimmers is too great to provide a one-on- one lesson experience. While we want to encourage younger children to swim and help them perfect their strokes, parents should consider doing some pre-season lessons to help get children ready for the season in order to have a safe and fun summer.

Want to become a Mustang? HBCC Swim Team 2019 Fees: • $130 for first swimmer • $105 for sibling • $20 for swimmers 15 and over

HBCC will offer online registration this year! To register, go to www.swimhbcc.com and sign in. Returning members may use their username and password from the 2018 season and will then be asked to update their information. New members or first time swimmers may create a new login. Once logged in, members may update their account information and register for the upcoming season. Registration fees will be charged to your HBCC member account. HBCC registration fees include: team t-shirt, team swim cap, expert coaching during swim practices and meets, awards, and the end-of-season party. HBCC swim team fees will not include registration to the Summer Championships at Georgia Tech as registration for this event will take place later in the season; the cost will be $23 per swimmer.

Swim Team Registration - Opens March 15th For more information please contact us at youth@horseshoebendcc.com

All HBCC Mustang swimmers must also register with the ASA. This year the ASA registration will be done at the same time you register for the swim team on www.swimhbcc.com.
