The facemask must incorporate an anti-vomit valve • Discarded needles should only be discarded via a “Sharps“ box. Housekeepers

The following advise is applicable to all but more especially to housekeepers:

• Housekeepers must be fully trained before starting work to follow safe procedures. In particular they should not put their hands into refuse bins at any times and should report any needles found • Beds and furniture should be carefully checked before they are moved or bedding changed • Housekeeping team members must receive training to ensure that waste bins are emptied by lifting out the inner plastic bag lining (handling by the top) from the bin and placing into the refuse sack • Broken glass must always be double wrapped and placed into a metal bin for disposal • Should blood, vomit, faeces or other body fluids be encountered, follow the safe working procedures listed in Training Short 1.8 (use protective gloves and aprons). The contaminated area should be washed with water and a detergent, thereafter treated with sanitiser or other suitable disinfectant, left for at least ten minutes and re-washed with clean water, using a clean disposable cloth, mop or brush which has not been previously contaminated. Discard all cleaning cloths after the task is complete • If a discarded syringe or hypodermic needle is found, a trained team member should follow the procedure in Training Short 1.8. The article should not be touched but telephone contact should be made with the Duty Manager, for safe disposal. It should be carefully picked up using a pair of tweezers or lifted by the thick end and put into a yellow‚ Sharps Container. After dealing with any such needles hands should then be thoroughly washed • If the item is not easily accessible, for instance in a WC cistern or behind waste pipework, metal or plasic tongs (Not Kitchen Tongs) should be used and disposed of after use. In all cases, protective rubber gloves must be worn
