Resources for Suicide Prevention and Support Instructions

Use these instructions to complete the Resources for Suicide Prevention and Support handout that appears on the following pages. The handout includes writing lines for you to add information for local resources, online resources, and survivor of suicide loss groups. This allows you to tailor the handout to your specific community’s available services before you distribute it to Lifelines Prevention program participants. Local Resources In the first section of your Resources handout (on the following pages), list local mental health resources and local hospital mental health resources if your community has them. Also list faith community leaders with whom you have spoken about the goals and objectives of the Lifelines Prevention program. If your school has a cadre of local therapists to whom you refer youth who may be at risk for suicide, list them as well. Online Resources There is an ever-increasing number of web-based resources for information and support related to mental health problems. The list included in the handout’s second section is not all-inclusive and allows space for you to add other sites. Make sure, though, if you add websites, that you check them out first to make sure the content is safe. Resources for Survivors of Suicide Loss Sometimes you may be asked to provide resources for people who have lost someone they knew from suicide. They are often referred to as “survivors of suicide loss.” In addition to the national American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, whose information is provided in this section, your community may have specialized services for survivors that you can also list in the space provided.
