TOM IANNACONE Director Of Athletics Tom Iannacone is in his fourth year as the University of San Diego Director of Athletics. He assumed the position September 1, 1988 after a nationwide search. The 50-year-old Iannacone has made great strides in his first three years. His accomplishments at USD

include an on-going internal reorganization of the athletic de- partment, plus improvements in the major areas of new per- sonnel, additional scholarship assistance, facilities improve- ments, promotions and marketing, fund raising, drug education, academic support, and a new university approved plan for scholarship support and sports sponsorship. Iannacone came to the University of San Diego with an impressive list of credentials and a thorough knowledge of intercollegiate athletics. Prior to USO he was Director of Ath- letics for four years at St. Francis College in Loretto, Pennsyl- vania. Hard work, loyalty and dedication are just some of the words that easily describe Iannacone. His major contributions at St. Francis included the expansion of sports offerings and schol- arships for both men and women, improved budgets, renovation of athletic facilities, the hiring of additional staff, and the estab- lishment of a master plan for the future and continual develop- ment of athletics. He served on several committees, most notably the ECAC Infractions committee and the Northeast Conference committee on conference development, which de- veloped a plan for the future and implemented the position for a full-time commissioner. Currently Iannacone serves as a consultant to the NCAA I-AAA Football Committee. Prior to his tenure at St. Francis, Iannacone served as as- sistant athletic director at Fordham University from 1977-84. Along with his administrative duties at Fordham, he was an assistant football coach for the Rams. From 1975-78, he acted as offensive coordinator and backfield coach as Fordham captured 19 victories in their final 24 games during this span. The 1977 squad was and remains the highest scoring team in Fordham history, averaging 34 points per game. In 1983 Iannacone was presented the prestigious Jack Coffey Award by the Alumni Association for outstanding contributions to Fordham athletics. He also served on various Metro Atlantic Conference committees. Prior to Fordham, Iannacone taught physical education and coached track and football in the Norwalk, Ridgefield and New Milford (CT) school districts from 1964-76. He made his col- legiate football coaching debut as an offensive backfield coach at Western Connecticut State University in 1974. A 1964 graduate of the University of Connecticut, Iannacone received his master of science degree in physical education from Southern Connecticut State University in 1973. Tom and his wife, Cynthia, have three children: Tom Jr., Jennifer and Eric; all three are students at USD.

The WCC has continued to prove itself as one of the strongest collegiate baseball conferences in the country. Pepperdine was the league's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Regionals in 1991 while LMU represented the WCC in 1990. Both teams appeared at the NCAA's in 1989. Other conference members include the University of San Diego, the University of San Francisco, Santa Clara University and St. Mary's College. Pepperdine has won the WCC crown in six of the last seven years and has won or shared every conference title but one since 1974. Baseball was originally established as a conference sport in 1968. However, from 1977 through 1984, WCC teams com- peted with teams from the PCAA in the Northern California Baseball Association (Nevada, St. Mary's, San Francisco, Santa Clara, Pacific, San Jose State, Fresno State), and the Southern California Baseball Association (Pepperdine, Loyola Marymount, and San Diego from the WCC). For the first time this year, the WCC will play a 30-game round robin schedule with the league champion receiving the WCC's automatic bid to the NCAA playoffs. wee STAFF

Page 4 JOHN CUNNINGHAM Head Coach Head Coach John Cunningham begins his 29th season at the helm of the USO baseball program. With 14 winning seasons under his belt, Cunningham carries a record of 645-663- 16 into the 1992 campaign. A native San Diegan, Cunningham attended St. Augustine High School and the University

of San Francisco. A basketball and baseball standout, Cunningham also made the President's Honor Roll six limes at USF as well as achieving membership in "Alpha Sigma Nu", the National Jesuit Honor Society. In basketball, he was named All-Conference and listed as Honorable Mention on the Catholic All-American lists and was named USF's "Athlete Of The Year" as a senior. After a tour in the armed forces and a brief stretch in the farm system of the Baltimore Orioles, Cunningham began his career at USO in 1962. He won his 600th game during the 1989 season. His teams have won thirty or more games six times ('71, '78 through '81, and '87) with four of his squads advancing to post-season playoffs. His 1971 squad won the regional title, advancing to the College World Series, and set a school record with 34 wins. For that performance, Cunningham was named "Coach Of the Year" in District VIII. 1979 was Cunningham's first effort at the Division I level. Contrary to expectations, he guided the Toreros to an impressive 32-19-1 record and a fourth place finish in the Southern California Baseball Association. The Toreros moved into the West Coast Conference in 1985 - with 1991 seeing them finish 11-24 in WCC action. Cunningham's fine career has been noticed by his peers. He was inducted into the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall Of Fame at its annual Hall Of Fame-Coach Of the Year banquet in New Orleans on January 5, 1991 . An active member of the ABCA for 28 years, Cunningham joined 142 amateur baseball coaches in this elite group. John and his wife, Nancy, have one son, Geoffrey, age 17. Coach Molina is beginning his seventh season as assistant to John Cunningham. Jake's background prior to USD includes seven years of junior college coaching. He was head coach at Santa Monica College from 1974-77, before taking over the San Diego City College position from 1978 thru 1984. At San Diego City College, Jake led the '80 and '81 teams to the conference championship. The past three summers Jake managed the Spanish National Team. He will be the Spanish Olympic Team Manager for the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. A native of San Diego, Jake graduated from UCLA in '71 with a degree in Physical Education and received his master's degree in Physical Education in 1972 from San Diego State. Jake and his wife Sherri have one son, Nathan, age 18. Assistant Coach GLENN GODWIN Coach Godwin also begins his seventh year as pitching coach for the USD Toreros. A 1982 graduate of USD with a degree in Business Administration, Glenn played for Coach Cunningham's '81 and '82 teams. In 1982, Glenn had a 14-4 record in 21 ap- pearances. Along with his 2.92 ERA, Glenn fanned 142 batters in 148 innings and is one of just nine Toreros to be named All- American. Godwin was drafted by the Oakland A's organization in 1982 and played A ball for 2 1/2 years between '82-84. Glenn completed his MBA at USD in May of 1987. The past five summers he has managed a baseball team in Sweden, with his squad being crowned the Swedish National Champions two times. Volunteer Assistant Coach RAY BUTLER Ray Butler begins his fifth season with the Toreros as a volun- teer assistant coach to John Cunningham. Prior to assisting the 1988 men's team, Ray was an assistant coach to USD's women's softball team in 1987. An avid softball player, Ray has managed and played in adult softball leagues the past 12 years. Ray has held a part-time position in the USD Business School as an economics instructor since 1978, as well as a teaching position in SDSU's Department of Economics since 1976. A 1968 graduate from Cal State Fullerton with a B.A. degree in Economics, Ray also has an M.S. degree in International Eco- nomics from UCLA (1969) and an A.B.D. in Economics from UC Riverside (1976). Ray and his wife Renate reside in the Clairemont area of San Diego.

The Outlook

1992 USD BASEBALL OUTLOOK Depth...balance...experience. The 1992 USO baseball team will be deep in all areas, balanced with multi-position players and long on experience. It is also a team surrounded with several question marks. It is the answers to these questions that may well determine the ultimate success for Coach John Cunningham and the Toreros. Sixteen letterwinners comprise what is a 28 member USO Torero baseball squad. Included among these veterans are six pitchers, three catchers, five infielders and two outfielders. The remaining members comprise what may be the deepest USO team in years. Key among the returning players is junior Kevin Herde. Herde, a second team AII-WCC selection as a utility player in 1991, is ticketed to be the Toreros' starting catcher. The team's "Most Valuable Player" in 1991, Herde is coming off a season that saw him bat .316 with a team best eight home runs and 48 runs batted in. As testimony to his versatility, Herda compiled a record of 3-2 with an ERA of 5.08 in 18 appearances as a pitcher. If Herde is not the catcher, then the position may well belong to either sophomore Craig Ross or senior Sean Gousha. Ross, who showed vast improvement during the off-season, batted .250 in 1991 . Gousha, a three-year veteran backstopper who appears healthy again, batted .243 as a junior. A pair of freshmen, Colin Harsh and Jacob Slania, complete the receiving corps. Seven righthanders and three lefthanders comprise a pitching staff that will allow Coach Cunningham to make many moves. Heading the mound corps will be senior righthander Pat Crema, USD's 1991 "Pitcher Of The Year". Crema, who was 4-3 with an ERA of 4.72 and a team- high 49 strikeouts in 20 apperances, will likely be joined in the starting rotation by sophomore lefthander Sean Durbin (3-6, 6.17 ERA) and three newcomers-senior righthander Jeff Crane and freshmen Travis Burgus, a lefthander, and Mike Saipe, who Cunningham describes as "1he hardest thrower on the staff". Cunningham looks to a pair of righthanders-junior Marc Bouchard (1-3) and sophomore Chris Collins (0-5, six saves)-to battle for the role of bullpen closer. Senior lefthander Aaron Miller (0-1 in '89) returns to the squad after a year's absence and will join sophomore Pete Schoen (0-1) and freshman Pat James in the long relief role. The strength of the Toreros' infield lies in the double play combina- tion of second baseman Jim Keen and shortstop Chad Boyd. Keen, a senior, batted .255 as a junior and is a three year starter. Boyd, a junior, was the Toreros' top hitter in 1991 at .324 with 35 runs scored and 20 rbi's. First base will be the domain of junior Tony Moeder, who moves in from centerfield after batting .314 with five home runs and 32 rbi's as a sophomore. The job at third base is up for grabs as three Toreros are making a strong bid to receive the starting nod from Cunningham-the incumbent, junior Dave Pingree (.257 with 25 sto- len bases), and freshmen Brady Clark and Eric Morton. Strong armed junior Mike Freehill, a junior college transfer, will provide depth at second, short and third as will sophomore John Fenn (.307), the top candidate for designated hitter duties, as first base. Senior leftfielder Ed Scofield, tabbed by Cunningham to be the Toreros' leadoff hitter, anchors a steady defensive outfield. Scofield, who hit .288 as a junior, will be joined in the outfield by sophomore rightfielder Charlie Setzler, a .220 hitter in '91, and freshman Larry Williams, a centerfielder with outstanding speed whom Cunningham says "gets to balls others have not gotten to in the past". Sophomore Josh Stepner, coming off a fine Fall campaign, has the ability to play each outfield position. The 1992 USO Toreros will be a team based on balance in all phases of the game. Offensively, the Toreros, due to their depth, will have more maneuverability and will, according to Cunningham, be ·more competitive within our own make up". Cunningham expects his team to be strong defenders, especially up the middle. The keys to the season success will lie, in Cunningham's estimation, "in the type of pitching we get".

CUNNINGHAM INDUCTED INTO ABCA HALL OF FAME January 1991 Head Coach John Cunningham ,along with five othercoaches, was inducted into the American Baseball Coaches Association's Hall of Fame in early January. This is the highest honor the ABCA awards and coach Cunningham joins a most prestigious group of baseball greats. The formal induction came on January 5, 1991, at the Hall of Fame-Coach of the Year Banquet in New Orleans. He now joins 142 other amateur baseball coaching greats in the ABCA Hall of Fame. Members of the associaton - other coaches - vote on who to add to the Hall of Fame each year. "That's what's really special, getting recognition from peers," says Cunningham, who has coached at USO since 1964 and enters the 1991 season with 624 career victories. "People like me don't usually get this kind of recognition,· he adds. "It's usually the people with the gaudy records that do." Cunningham has been an active member in the ABCA for 27 continuous years. Besides his 27 years of coaching USO, Cunningham also coached 14 years in the California Collegiate Baseball League where he won over 300 games and 6 cham- pionships. Cunningham's USO teams have won thirty or more games six times and four of his teams have gone to post-season playoffs. Two of those four became regional champions and College World Series participants. His 1971 team won the regional tide while setting the school record of 34 wins - for that performance Cunningham was named District VIII ·coach of the Year." Nine of his players have been named All-American and two were selected to represent the United States in interna- tional competition. Among the more prominent players Cunningham has sent into professional ball are John Wathan, an All-America selec- tion in 1970, who is now the manager of the Kansas City Royals and outfielder Kerry Dineen, a two-time All-American at USO who played in the Yankees organization. One of the reasons Cunningham has stayed on at USO for so long is his philosophy of academics and athletics falls perfectly in line with the university's. He is a firm believer that academics and athletics are not incompatible and that student-athletes can do both and do both well. Approximately 90.0 percent of his student-athletes that stay in the program for four years graduate on time - and many of them are now lawyers, doctors and businessmen. He has done so much for the school, that in January of 1988, the university honored him with an elegant dinner party, invited 400 of his closest friends - many being ex-players of his - and then announced that it was renaming the baseball field after him:CUNNINGHAM BASEBALL STADIUM.John Cunningham is a man who has devoted his life to teaching the game of baseball, and more importantly, in helping all his players set and attain goals, and in directing and preparing them for life after college. The American Baseball Coaches Association couldn't have picked a better person for their Hall of Fame than John Cunningham. UNIVERSITY PROFILE The University of San Diego is an independent, Catholic univer- sity located on a 180-acre mesa overlooking Mission Bay, San Diego Harbor, and the Pacific Ocean. The campus is named Alcala Park after the Spanish university town where St. Didacus (i.e., Diego) spent much of his time. Complementing its splendid natural setting is the University's lo- cation just 10 minutes from downtown San Diego conveniently close to the major business, cultural, residential, and recreational areas, as well as the rail, bus and air terminals. Founded in 1949, USD is presently experiencing record atten- dance. Undergraduate enrollment stands at 3,900 and graduate students bring the overall campus enrollment to 6,000. The University includes a College of Arts and Sciences, and Schools of Business Administration, Education, Nursing and Law. Each is characterized by high academic standards, small classes, and excellent student-faculty relations. Though the majority of students come from the West Coast, every region of the United States is well-represented on campus. Students also attend USD from 24 foreign countries. In January of 1987, USD opened the doors to the Earnest and Jean Hahn Uni- versity Center, a 74,500 square foot building for students, faculty and staff. The two-level Center is the largest building on campus. Recreation, intramural and athletic activities are expanding rapidly. Among the many recreation and intramural programs offered, some of the favorites include: Mission Bay Aquatic Center activities (wa- ter skiing, surfing, sailing and crew), modern dance, aerobics, bowl- ing, karate, backpacking, softball, tennis, floor hockey, volleyball and many more. USD intercollegiate sports for men include football, soccer, cross- country, basketball, baseball, crew, tennis and golf. In women's intercollegiate sports, USD fields programs in volleyball, cross- country, swimming, basketball, softball, crew and tennis.
