Eddy current inspection for hot rolling mills EDDY current inspection methods are designed to detect surface defects on conductive materials, especially in conditions requiring an immediate analysis. However, these methods are very sensitive and have a high dependence on environmental conditions. Manufacturing technologies, and specifically analysis software, have had to increase their efficiency and versatility in high-performance production environments, such as hot rolling mill lines. The harsh environmental working conditions in hot rolling mills require that testing solutions to detect defects have to be prepared to face any factor that could change the correct development of the measurement. Previously, when something was wrong with traditional control systems, between 20 and 60 minutes was needed to return to a normal situation, due to the need to cool the products in order to use other inspection methods. With ISEND’s HOTdiscover solution, testing can be carried out effectively at high temperatures and very high speeds. Studying and processing HOTdiscover’s digital signal, ISEND has also developed software applications that enable users to get information from the coil located on the production line. This allows the company to analyse the current status of the production line, ensuring the control of the rolling process and obtaining the necessary knowledge about the production process to carry out preventive maintenance actions. Weekly off-line validation with calibrated test pieces ensures accurate operation of the testing equipment. Coils are also tested after each use to validate their performance and reliability. These maintenance actions result in savings for the factory and avoid unnecessary stock of spare parts. Problems due to wear components, signal instability or temperature increases related to cooling flow loss can be predicted before they return in an error in measurement. The system can automatically detect other factors that could cause problems, such as accumulated scrap in production lines, lack of air pressure, or use of wrong coil diameters. These problems are recorded, and alarm devices can be displayed to warn quality control staff. Other studies related to the frequency distribution of the defects inform about their position and their most possible causes. Periodic defects like roll marks caused by broken or damaged rollers are detected and sorted depending on where they are produced, as well as random defects in billets and finished wire rod like pitting, cracks, scabs or overlaps.
