O nce again the West Coast Conference p roved its domin ance on a national scale this p ast season with four teams qualifing for NCAA Tournament action, with San ta Clara advancing to the final eight. Conference member Portland is one year removed from winning the Women's College Cup, the league's second national title in three years. In fact the NCAA Championship match in 2002 was an all WCC affair with Portland
ousting Santa Clara in double overtime, denying the Broncos a second consecutive crown . Needless to say the WCC is regarded as one of the premiere soccer conferences in the United States. League members San Diego, Pepperdine, St. Mary's and Loyola Marymount have all received invitations to the NCAA College Cup Tournament in recent years. San Diego continued its traditi on of playing excellent soccer, making their fifth consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament last season. USO was defeated in first round action by

UCLA in Los Angeles. Three con– ference schools ended the season ranked in the NSCAA Top-25. The WCC is proud to enter its 13th season of wom en 's soccer. Historically, four member team s h ave tas te d p os t- season pla y, with Santa Clara leading the way with 14 appearances, including ten NCAA semi-finals. Portland fol– lows with ten trips, including seven appearances in the NCAA Semi– Finals and the College Cup Title a season ago. The Pi lots adva nced to the Finals in 1995. The University of San Diego has a ppeared in the NCAA Touma– m en t six times, aiming for their sixth straight trip in 2004. Saint Mary's has qualified for the tour– nament three times, most recently ad vancing to the second round in DID YOU KNOW? 2001. Women's soccer is one of 13 sports the 51- year-old conference sponsors. Started in 1952 as a men's baske tball leagu e for fi ve Bay Area schools, the WCC added women's athletics to its lineup in 1985. All WCC members are private institutions with high academic standards and growi ng athletic tradition.
