Strong finish to Cowboy Christmas for Bray IN HIS WORDS PADEN BRAY

I t was a good Cowboy Christmas. Man, at first it was a little rough. We made good runs at the beginning of the week. We did well at Ponoka (Alberta, winning $5,428), then we were 4.9 (seconds) at Red Lodge (Mont.), 5.3 at Cody (Wyo.) and then 5-flat at Eugene (Ore.) and won $54 total. So, we were making good runs but not winning anything. Finally, we hit good at St.

to pick me up at school sometimes. It gives me confidence to rope with him because he does his job very well. It gives me confidence because I know where he’s going to be every time. The last three or four weeks we’ve caught I’d say 80-85% of my steers. It’s the same go every time. It’s fun to rope with a guy that consistent. We don’t talk a whole lot about rodeo.

Rookie team roping heeler Paden Bray, 20, is making the most of roping with a world champ. During Cowboy Christmas, Bray and 2017 PRCA Team Roping Header World Champion Erich Rogers each won $17,349, tying for seventh- highest earners. The cash pushed Bray to 24th in the PRCA | RAMWorld Standings with $28,325 as of July 9, about $7,000 away from breaking into the Top 15 and qualifying for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in his first season. Bray, of Stephenville, Texas, is leading the PRCA | Resistol Rookie Standings for heelers.

Paul (Ore.) and wonWindow Rock (Ariz.) and placed at Prescott (Ariz.). It was a good finish to the week for us. That’s what’s nice about roping with Erich. Even when we’re not winning and we’re drawing good ones, it’s easy to catch them. We were in catch mode and everything was flowing pretty good. The win at St. Paul was pretty awesome. That’s a prestigious rodeo. That’s one that everyone talks about, and that was pretty much my first major ProRodeo buckle. I’ve got this amateur buckle and it’s going off as soon as I get this ProRodeo buckle. Erich and I started roping together about the middle of March. He asked me to rope with him. I’m tickled to death to be able to rope with someone like that. We’ve known each other much longer. He knew my mom and used to stay at my house. He always had a spot at my house (in Texas) during winter rodeos. He started coming over when I was in fourth or fifth grade. He used

We try to keep it light, have fun. Before a run we’ll talk, game plan, and for about 30 minutes after the rodeo we might talk about what we thought happened. Oh, yeah, I definitely notice the age difference. (Rogers is 32.) I’m a rookie and he’s a veteran. I call him Dad half the time. He doesn’t get a choice if he likes it or not. And I know I’m supposed to be all into country music, but that ’80s country gets old, I’m not going to lie. He listens to Prime Country and it puts me right to sleep. I never looked at the world standings because I hadn’t won enough. I would look to see where I was in the rookie standings. After Cowboy Christmas I was looking at the world standings in the 30s and 40s and couldn’t find my name. I had $28,000 won and I’m not in the standings? Then I looked up higher and I was 24th. The first time I broke into the Top 50, I was 24th! The game plan from the beginning was to make the Finals. We left home and our game plan was to be all in. We’ve got the same attitude.

Saddle bronc rider Cort Scheer scored a St. Paul (Ore.) Rodeo-record ride of 89 points on Big Bend Rodeo’s Kool Toddy. The St. Paul mark had been 88 by Cody Wright (2003), Matt Marvel (2007) and Bradley Harter (2011).

Roughstock riders battle in All-Around As of July 9, the race to win the 2019 season’s all-around cowboy gold buckle was littered with competitors who compete in roughstock events. Stetson Wright, who competes in bull riding and saddle bronc riding, led the way with $105,416. Daylon Swear- ingen competes in bull riding, bareback riding and saddle bronc riding and was seventh in the all-around. Among the top eight competitors in the PRCA | RAM World Standings for the all- around, five compete in at least one roughstock event. The last cowboy to win the all-around award as a roughtsock com- petitor was Ty Murray who did it in 1998 in bull riding and saddle bronc riding.

HOT TAKES

93.5 + 100 = Cody Stampede The 100th edition of the Cody (Wyo.) Stampede saw a historic bareback ride. Caleb Bennett posted a 93.5-point ride on Frontier Rodeo’s Gun Fire. That’s the fifth-highest scored ride in PRCA history. Only four other rides have hit 94. Impressively, Bennett needed the 93.5 to win the rodeo. Four days prior, Orin Larsen notched a 93-point ride on C5 Rodeo’s Make Up Face.

COWBOY GRILLE WITH AMBER BAILLIE

How did you get involved in saddle bronc riding? Ben: My dad (Chris) rode broncs and went to the Canadian Finals Rodeo a couple of times. My cousin (2018 Saddle Bronc Riding PRCA Rookie of the Year) Dawson Hay got me into steer riding when I was about 14. At first, I wasn’t interested but then when I gave it a try, I liked the adrenaline I got from it, like I do with motocross. It’s cool and I like doing things out of my element. How are you feeling about the season? Ben: Good. I travel with (saddle bronc rider and cousin) Logan Hay. For the first run, we traveled south and that was stressful. I wasn’t riding well. But when I returned home, I was able to regroup, get on a lot of practice horses and I started riding better. I’d like to win rookie of the year and make the CFR. I want to go to as many Canadian rodeos as possible; Logan and I entered a good number of rodeos for the Fourth of July run. What’s the biggest thing you’ve learned competing in ProRodeo? Ben: I think being humble and supporting kids who want to be involved in rodeo is important to the sport. Layton Green and Dawson Hay have really helped me along the way, and I want to do the same for younger contestants. What keeps you competing? Ben: Following my dreams. I hope to make the NFR one day and want to make the best bronc rides that I can. What’s been your biggest challenge? Ben: Learning how to ride broncs. I didn’t figure it out very fast. It was a long process until I got decent at it. What do you appreciate most about your event? Ben: I love riding bucking horses and hanging out with the boys (fellow contestants). It’s a cool sport that I want to continue to pursue and make a career from. My family has been very supportive. My mom watches it as much as she can and my dad supports me, looking after our cattle and doing my chores on the ranch. What would you like to improve on? Ben: Lifting my rein, I’ve always had a hard time with that because it doesn’t come natural to me. I’ll get going and have to remind myself to do it. It’s one of the hardest things to learn in bronc riding. How do you get ready for a ride? Ben: I like to stretch so that I can be loose and cool. I like to feel the energy of the horse and remain calm. I nod quietly, and then it’s game on. What’s the worst injury you’ve had? Ben: I’ve broken my collarbone three times, one of those times I also broke two ribs. It took about three months for me to recover and to really feel good again. Luckily, it was during the winter. After that, my friends thought I would quit riding, but I didn’t. A lot of guys will get discouraged after an injury and will delay getting back on a bronc. But for me, it felt good to get going again and to move forward instead of backward. What else do you enjoy besides rodeo? Ben: Riding dirt bikes. It requires a lot of endurance; you’ve got to be fit, and it keeps you fit. I also like to play hockey in winter, it’s good cardio. What’s your favorite way to de-stress? As summer temperatures have heated up, so has Ben Andersen’s rookie season. As of July 8, the 20-year-old saddle bronc rider was second in the PRCA | Resistol Rookie Standings with $21,586 ($11,162 behind leader Stetson Wright). With his goals being to win Rookie of the Year and to make the Canadian Finals Rodeo, the Eckville, Alberta, native isn’t slowing down anytime soon.

BEN ANDERSEN

Ben: Probably training colts. It’s relaxing to go outside and work with colts when I’m at home. Some people find it frustrating, but I think it’s cool. You just have to be patient. Do you have a favorite TV show? Ben: Lonesome Dove: The Series . I’ve enjoyed that since I was little. If I were to pick an era I’d want to live in, it’d be that one. What is your favorite time of the day? Ben: About 5 p.m., when the sun is going down. We get some cool sunsets at home, and I enjoy watching the Northern Lights. What is something you’re particular about? Ben: My truck. I’m OCD when it comes to cleanliness, and I also like to keep up with maintenance and oil changes. I’m a firm believer in that if you want to keep it going and for it to be reliable. Do you have any pets? Ben: We have a family dog. Her name is Sprout, she’s a Jack Russell terrier and is about 15 years old.

Breding injuries leave him out for several months Down & Out SHORT ROUND

P arker Breding’s strong 2019 PRCA season was sabotaged July 10 by injury. Breding, who was third in the July 9 PRCA | RAM World Standings with $105,169, suffered a severe, left knee injury while competing in a non-PRCA rodeo. “I tore my ACL (anterior cruciate ligament), MCL (medial collateral ligament) and there were some smaller ligaments that go with the ACL that were torn and the very top of my tibia on my left leg got some small fractures,” said Breding, 26. “Right now I’m in a big knee brace that’s locked, and I’m trying to get in to to see renowned-surgeon (Guy Schmidt) in Billings (Mont.). They said

Breding

the surgery would be an ACL reconstruction, and they are telling me that (recovery) would be nine to 12 months, but I’m really hoping if I do have the surgery I would be able to come back in four months for the NFR.” Breding, who qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in 2013, 2015 and 2018, made the whistle while riding Kesler Rodeo’s Late Nite Host. “I made a pretty good ride and I had a little tiny bull, and he wouldn’t quit spinning when I was trying to get off him,” Breding said. “The rope was pretty sticky so I couldn’t get my hand out either, and I put one foot down in the dirt and (my other foot) was still on his back as I was trying to step off him. He took my right leg with him spinning and my left knee stayed in the dirt and it got buckled sideways. I felt a big pop when it happened, and I knew right away it was something pretty bad.” Breding, who finished a career-best fourth in the world standings last year, has had his share of knee injuries, but nothing to this extent. “I have no posterior cruciate ligament in either

of my knees, and in my left knee I had two surgeries for my meniscus but they were minor,” Breding said.

Former Turtle Vernon “Dude” Smith Jr. passes

Vernon “Dude” Smith Jr., one of the oldest living Gold Card members (No. 159) and one of the few remaining members of the Cowboys’ Turtle Association, passed away July 3 in Wichita Falls, Texas. He was 91. Smith joined the Cowboys’ Turtle Association two years before the association’s name changed to the Rodeo Cowboys Association, which eventually became the PRCA. During that time, he was rubbing elbows with some of the ProRodeo Hall of

Fame’s most notable cowboys who helped shape the sport as it stands today. “We all knew each other back then, but the guys today don’t all know each other,” Smith said in a June 9, 2017, article in ProRodeo Sports News . “I don’t know what happened, but there’s not as many cowboys anymore.” Smith competed in every event except team roping, since it wasn’t a common event during his ProRodeo career.
