After 60 years of being known as the Hennessy Gold Cup, Ladbrokes reinvigorated one of the most popu- lar contests of the Jump racing season with an injection of prize money and a new identity. London and Julian had seen my portfolio. The two-day meeting – on Friday and Saturday – was broadcast live on ITV Racing. The Ladbrokes Trophy, formerly known as the Hennessy Gold Cup, was worth £250,000 this year, an increase of £50,000 on the 2016 race. The major race on Friday was the £50,000 Grade 2 Ladbrokes Long Distance Hurdle. The total prize money across the two days increased by almost £100,000 to £700,000, with Ladbrokes sponsoring 13 of the 14 races in an initial five-year deal. Ladbrokes Coral Group chief executive Jim Mullen said: “Horseracing is a vital part of the heritage of our business, and we are passionate about maintaining our support of the sport. “We have committed to work in partnership with Newbury Race- course to build the two days of this fixture into one of the most compelling attractions not just in the racing calendar, but in that of sport as a whole.”
