Chivas Performance Guidelines v.Jun 2018

3. Looking Back Meeting cont.

Employee Preparation cont.

Identify your key messages

Once your initial preparation is complete, you may wish to spend time identifying key points to reinforce throughout the Looking Back discussion.

As an example:

What were your main contributions to the business during the last year?

What were your key learnings?

What support do you need going forward to ensure success for you and the business?

Anticipate areas of debate

It is inevitable that from time to time you and your manager will have different perspectives. Therefore, in order to take a constructive approach and avoid a defensive response to any point of debate during your Looking Back, take time to anticipate the likely topics.

When preparing:

• Place yourself in your manager’s shoes and try to understand his/her perspective – what did they need to see from you, what were their expectations etc? • Listen to the points being raised first prior to responding • How you can help your manager to understand things from your perspective? • Remember a debate is not a situation of conflict, therefore always maintain your professionalism and use the Greenline methodology to create clarity and commitment.
