Ballot Order of Candidates: The Secretary of State does, by random drawing, determines the order in which candidates are listed on the ballot. The drawing will be conducted on Thursday, August 13, 2020 . The City Clerk’s office will be notified of the order and will publish a Notice of Nominees in the local newspaper. Candidate’s Statement (for Voter’s Sample Ballot Pamphlet): Each candidate may submit a Candidate’s Statement to the voters. The form has been provided. The City of Morgan Hill will pay for half (1/2) the cost to print the Candidate’s Statement in the voter’s sample ballot pamphlet. The maximum number of words permitted in the Candidate’s Statement is 200 and cannot exceed 22-lines. The County Registrar of Voters Office requires that the statement be typed using a fixed size font. (No more than 72 characters on each line) (See Registrar of Voters’ Candidate Guide .) Guidelines for computing word count are as follows: (1) Punctuation is not counted. (2) Dictionary words equal one word (e.g., “I”, “the”, “and”, etc. are counted as individual words). (3) Abbreviations/Acronyms equal one word (e.g., SJSU, PTA, U.S.M.C., S.J.P.D.). (4) All geographical names shall be considered as one word; for example, “City and County of San Francisco”, “San Jose”, and “County of Santa Clara”. (5) Numbers/Numerical Combinations/E-Mail Addresses Digits such as 1, 10, or 100, etc., will equal one word. Spelled out numbers such as: one, ten, or one hundred will equal one for each word. 50%, ½, etc. will equal one word Internet/E-Mail Addresses such as www.sccvote.org/johndoe@vote.com will equal one word. (6) Number or letter used to identify a portion of text such as (1)(a) will be counted as one word. (7) Dates consisting of a combination of words and digits shall be counted as one word (e.g., January 1, 2014). Dates consisting of all digits shall be counted as one word (e.g., 01/01/15). (8) Characters used in place of word or numbers such as & or # will be counted as one word. (9) Proper nouns will be counted as one word. (10) Hyphenated words that appear in any generally available dictionary, printed in the Unites States within the past 10 years shall be considered as one word. Each part of all other hyphenated words shall be counted as separate words. For example: mother- in-law = 1 word; one-half = 2 words
