First Grade PALS Sounds and Words Preparation Exercises are a series of 12 exercises that are presented to the entire class at the same time. Each one is about 10-15 minutes. See the graphic below: PALS in first grade routine: Sounds and Words:

Focuses on phonemic awareness and applying the alphabetic principal to decoding and fluency In using PALS in Skill Based Groups, teachers and students will do only the Sounds and Words routine. Sound and Words has 4 activities: 1. Letter Sound 2. Hearing Sounds 3. Sounding Out 4. Sentences and Stories

Lesson Components: see the sort and instructional routines on the following pages 1. Letter sounds in isolation: Lessons 1- 33, Lessons 33 – 57 vowel diagraph, digraph, r-controlled vowels, vowel teams, and ing. 2. Explicit sound-by-sound/ bumpy blending lessons: Lessons 1 – 36, Lessons 37 – 57 multi-syllabic blending 3. High frequency words 1 – 57 4. Reading Decodable sentence utilizing words taught in letter sounds, blending, segmenting lessons: Lessons 1 - 7 5. Reading Decodable sentences utilizing words taught in letter sounds, blending, segmenting lessons CVC & HF word reading: Lessons 1- 36 6. Reading Decodable sentences utilizing words taught in letter sounds, blending, segmenting lessons Multi-syllabic & HF word reading: Lessons 37 – 55.
