A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE PFA

The Peterborough Football Association was formed in 1893 as a sub-association of the Northamptonshire Football Association. The primary function of the Association is to promote football in the Peterborough Area and oversee the running of cup competitions for both Saturday and Sunday teams. To this end the Association’s Council promote and organise the Football Association Cup Competitions for all Leagues operating in the Peterborough District. Nine separate competitions are organised, involving at least 200 teams and over 4000 players being registered to take part. These range from senior players with semi-professional clubs to under 13 youth teams. Records reveal that in the 120 years the Association has functioned, there have only been ten secretaries. Although records up to 1908 For many years the Association organised and ran The Peterborough Hospital Cup Competition with such prestigious teams as CNR Loco, Westwoon Works, Fletton Peterborough, and Belvedere Football Clubs taking part. Proceeds from this competition were donated to the Peterborough Hospital. It is interesting to note that both the 25 th and the 50 th Anniversary of the Association were affected by war. The 75 th Anniversary was marked with a dinner held at the old Co-op Restaurant in conjunction with the Peterborough League. The Peterborough Football Association celebrated its 100 th Anniversary during the 1993-94 season, with a game between a combined side made up of players from Thomas Cook and Oundle Town, who have both celebrated their centenary and a Peterborough United Chairman’s XI. are incomplete, there is evidence of a meeting held in 1905 when a W. B. Richardson was secretary. The longest serving secretary was the late Albert Tipler, who served the Association for 38 years.
