One of our stories this month cannot fail to grab yourattention. It isa little likebeing inaJamesBond movie until you realise it’s very real, worthwhile and should be applauded by all of us. We’ve all heard of the green argument and the climate change program, there’s proof that the polar icecap ismeltingandeveryone is looking for ways of reducing harmful emissions that damage our fragile earth. It seems that big business is now taking the warnings to heart and have joined forces with the US government in the hunt for a reliable, green and alternative power source (see page 9). Search engine giant Google and the US Department of Energy are offering up some $43m on a geothermal power development project to harvest energy from the dormant Newberry volcano in Oregon. Seattle’s AltaRock Energy and Davenport Newberry Holdings, Conneticut, are working together on the project which basically involves pumping an astonishing 24 million gallons of water into the side of the volcano and being able to retrieve it fast enough while hot enough to make it a reliable source of energy.
