THE UNIVERSITY OF SAN DIEGO
THE SETTING The University of San Diego is an independent Catholic institution of higher education. Founded in 1949, USD is located on 180 acres overlooking Mission Bay, San Diego Harbor and the Pacific Ocean. The campus is named Alcala Park and is located just 10 minutes from downtown San Diego and the world famous San Diego Zoo. Historic Old Town is just minutes away as well. The city of San Diego along with this campus traces their origins to fifteenth century Spain. The campus was named after a Spanish village near Madrid - Alcala de Henares. Founded by the Greeks as Complutum, the village was later renamed Al Kala (the Castle) by the Moslems. Christians recaptured the village centuries later and founded a university, the University of Alcala, whose buildings became the inspiration for USD's style. Both institutions are located on a hill overlooking a river valley. THE CAMPUS The usd campus is regarded as one of the most architecturally unique institutions in the country. Featuring 34 major buildings designed in an ornamental 16th century spanish renaissance style. Since 1999, usd has added over 600,000 square feet of building space through numerous major construction and expansion projects. In 2000 the jenny craig pavilion, a 5,100-seat athletic center, opened its doors as home to usd volleyball and basketball. In the fall of 2001, the Joan B. Kroc institute for peace and justice opened on the west end of campus, and a new science and technology center recently opened for the 2003-04 academic year. Manchester village, a 101-unit apart– ment complex, opened its doors on the east end of campus in 2002. Most recently, the degheri alumni center, a 28,000 square-foot three-story building located near the main campus entrance, had its grand opening in may 2004.
ACADEMICS
USD enrolls more than 7,200 students who have a choice of more than 50 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The university's aca– demic units include the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Schools of Business Administration, Education, Law, Nursing and Peace Studies. Class size generally averages between 15-25 students with the student to teacher ratio being 18:1. Over 97 percent of USD's full-time faculty hold doctorates. In the annual ratings of the country's colleges and universities, published by U.S. News & World Report, USD moved from the regional to national category in 1994. The university currently ranks 105th among the top schools in the nation. STUDENT LIFE Student activities include cultural events, dances, boat cruises, beach par– ties, BBQ's, concerts, comedy nights, symposia and much more. Students participate in a wide range of volunteer projects such as adult literacy tutoring, senior citizen outreach, and house building in Tijuana. The in– tramural program is also an integral part of student life on campus with over two-thirds of the USD community partaking in intramural sports.
ATHLETICS The University of San Diego is a member of the West Coast Conference for nearly all sports and competes in 16 intercollegiate sports on the NCAA Division I level. The football team just completed its 11th season in the Pioneer Football League. Women's sports include: bas– ketball, cross country, rowing, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis and volleyball. Men's sports include: baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, football, r~wing, soccer and tennis. Since 1990, USD teams have made 44 NCAA post-season appearances; garnered 44 All-America selections; had 35 Conference Coaches of the Year; 29 Conference Players of the Year; 15 Conference Freshman of the Year; won 15 confer– ence championships; and had 4 WCC Scholar Athletes of the Year.

The University of San Diego, which sponsors sixteen NCAA Division I intercollegiate teams, com– petes under the athletic nickname of Toreros. In 1961, the Most Reverend Bishop Buddy, the founding father of USD, announced that the school's nickname would change from Pioneers to Toreros. "The name Toreros is keeping with the friendly relationship which exists between San Diego and Mexico," His Excellency said at the time. Torero comes from the spanish term toro, the bull, and from the word torear, to fight bulls. All of the contestants in the ring are called toreros. Torero is a general term describing a bullfighter and signifies courage, honor and fidelity. USD student-athletes, like the Torero, represent a willingness to stand alone in the ring and accept the challenge. 2005 USD SOFTBALL CELEBRATES25YEARSOF TORERO TRADITION The University of San Diego celebrates 25 years of Torero softball this season. Festivities include a silent auction and raffle with cocktails and hors d'oeuvres on Saturday, April 2 at 6:30pm in the JCP Warren Hospitality Suite. This program's success is possible because of dedicated players, coaches & administration ...both past and present. We are excited and honored to celebrate 25 years of USD Torero Softball!" fourth-year head coach Melissa McElvain.
The Toreros look to continue their improvement under Coach McElvain, returning 10 starters from last year's club that won 18 games, including a 1-0 victory over Princeton to win the UC Riverside Invitational. USD also played --------------- strong in its home tournaments, finishing 3-1 in both the USD Invatational and Senior Kim Delpit the San Diego Classic. Although they return plenty of experience, this year 's squad features just two seniors, outfielder Francesca Ramos (San Diego, CA) and 2B Kim Delpit (Palos Verdes, CA) . Ramos, Delpit and junior C/3B Sara Mason (Santa Rosa, CA) were tabbed team captains for the 2005 season. Delpit earned All-PCSC and Team MVP honors last year while starting 48 games at second base. Mason also earned All-PCSC honors and was named Team Best Offensive Player in 2004, leading the team with a .338 batting average, 51 hits, 7 doubles, 7 triples and 5 home runs. Also returning in the junior class are All-PCSC OF Gina Mc– Farland (Santa Rosa, CA), C / 3B Marissa Merchain (La Mirada, CA), SS Ashlee Nunes (Roseville, CA) and P Erin Harmonson (San Diego, CA). Harmonson and sophomore Christina Haake (Santa Barbara, CA) will anchor the pitching staff as the top two returning starters. Last year, Harmonson led the Toreros with 56 strikeouts, while Haake was second with 42. Also returning in the sophomore class are 2004 PCSC Freshman of the Year Rebekah Bradford (Turlock, CA), 1B/ 3B Alicia Massei (Chino Hills, CA) and utility player Danielle Treiber (Orange, CA). For the third straight year, Coach McElvain welcomes a strong class of newcomers. Sophomore transfer Darcie McClelland (Diamond Bar, CA/ Brown Univ) will add depth to the pitching staff, while Kathleen Bonja (San Dimas, CA), Stacy Compton (Pleasanton, CA), Ashley Hightower (Carmel, CA), Celine Pujol (Danville, CA) and Nichole Valenzuela (Covina, CA) will compete for playing time at the plate and in the field .
Once again, San Diego will face a challenging sched– ule. The Toreros will participate in three tournaments this season, hosting the USD Invitational (February 25-27) and USD Tournament (March 11-13) and then heading off the mainland during Spring Break to take part in the Hawai'i Invitational (March 17-20). The non-conference schedule also features a home-and-home series with cross-town rival San Diego State. When they return from Hawai'i, the Toreros will focus on winning the PCSC Championship and its newly instated automatic qualifier. "The goal for our program is to win a conference championship and reach postsea– son play. The Pacific Coast Softball Conference and the automatic bid make qualifying for the NCAA Regionals a reality. With the automatic bid in p lace, the 2005 season is full of exciting possibilities," coach McElvian.

MELISSA McELVAIN Head Coach 4th Season Melissa McElvain enters her fourth year as USD's Head Softball Coach. In 2003 the Toreros joined the Pacific Coast Softball Conference with LMU, Saint Mary's, Santa Clara, CS Sacramento and Portland State. Last season, McElvain led the Toreros to 3-1 records in both the USD Invitational and the San Diego Classic. Four USD players were named All-PCSC, including PCSC Freshman of the Year Rebekah Bradford, and nine players were named to the PCSC Comissioner's Honor Roll. The 2003 campaign was highlighted by their 7-3 win over 20th-ranked Oregon State, as well as back– to-back wins at the SDSU Tourney. The 2002 season was highlighted by the team's upset of 10th-ranked Cal State Fullerton. Twelve Toreros were named to the Western Intercollegiate All-Academic Squad, and two Toreros earned All-WISL Tourney honors. A 1999 graduate of Oklahoma State, she earned All-Big XII honors while playing catcher and second
base. She ranks in the Top 20 all-tme at OSU in several categories, including games played, hits, total bases, doubles, RBIs and stolen bases. McElvain (Turley) led the Cowgirls to three post-season appearances and a third place finish in the 1998 Women's College World Series. While at Oklahoma State, she earned All-Big XII academic honors while attaining a Business Administration degree with an emphasis in Marketing. Additionally, she earned the OSU Community Service Contribution Award (1997-98); the NCAA Leadership Award (1998); and
was a four-year SAAC Representative, including being the SAAC President her senior campaign. McElvain gained international experience in 1996, while travelling to Vancouver, Canada to com– pete versus Olympic teams such as Canada, Cuba, Italy and China. No stranger to USD, prior to her appointment as softball coach she was Assistant Sports Information Director for a year-and-a-half. A native San Diegan, McEl–
vain attended nearby Patrick Henry HS. Melissa and her husband Ryan reside in San Carlos.

Jennifer Bridges begins her second season on the USO coaching staff and first as the top assistant. She will work with all aspects of the team, also contributing to recruiting, scheduling and fundraising. Last season, Jennifer worked as
Kim Aggabao begins her first season on the Torero staff as the second assistant / volunteer coach. As the second assistant, she will work primarily with the infield and hitting. Kim comes to USO from UC
San Diego, where she graduated last year as a Biology major. She was a four-year starter as a middle infielder for the Triton softball team and was named team captain both her junior and senior year. Kim was also named 1st Team All California Collegiate Athletic Association three times, including being named CCAAMVP her senior season after leading the league with a .411 batting average. Originally from Walnut, California, Kim finished her career at UCSD hitting .312 and ranks in the top six all-time in six different categories. Last year, she also set the Triton record for most doubles in a season with 23.
a second assistant for the Toreros. A 2001 USO graduate, Jennifer earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology, along with a minor in Business Administration. While playing for the Torero softball program Jennifer played catcher, third base and first base. She earned her Master of Science degree in Physical Education from Azusa Pacific University in 2003. Her previous coaching experience includes assisting the softball programs at the University of San Diego High School and Whittier College. She is from Downey, California in the Los Angeles County area.

14 The Pacific Coast Softball Conference Earns 2005 Automatic Qualifier After two seasons of competition, the Pacific Coast Softball Con– ference has received an automatic qualifier (AQ) for NCAA postsea– son play, Commissioner Wendy Guthrie announced in October. The AQ comes in time for the 2005 season of PCSC competition. A new conference must meet a number of criteria set by the NCAA to earn an AQ, most notably completing two seasons of play. With both the 2003 and 2004 seasons under its belt, the PCSC became eligible for the AQ in May. "We are just absolutely delighted with this announcement," Guthrie said. "The Pacific Coast Softball Conference was established

with the first most priority of improving the experience for the student-athletes within our conference." With the AQ in place, the team with the best conference record at the end of PCSC play will automatically advance to
the 64-team NCAA postseason tournament. The competitive PCSC has yielded different conference champions in each of its two seasons of play: Loyola Mary– mount won the inaugural title, while Santa Clara took the 2004 crown. The NCAA Division I Management Council Administrative Committee announced the approval of the Pacific Coast Softball Conference (PCSC) for Division I conference membership in women's softball on October 17, 2002. The inaugural season of PCSC softball began on April 5, 2003, with six member schools: Sacramento State, Loyola Marymount, Portland State, Saint Mary's, Santa Clara, and San Diego. "An automatic qualification is a significant step in providing a quality experience and providing a championship opportunity for our student-athletes.
