meekness. Instead of defending himself, like many people do when they are challenged, Moses fell face down on the ground. The meek person does not fight for position, they allow God to answer the question. Moses knew that he did not put himself in this place of leadership. It has been the work of God. Because He had confidently embraced this reality, there was no fight in him, only compassion for those who came against him. God did answer the question. The ground opened up and swallowed the rebellious. Moses demonstrated meekness by being open handed. God is a good Father. He gives good gifts to His children. As we walk with Him there are many gifts that we receive. These gifts come in many different forms such as relationships, positions, ministries, possessions, etc... How we hold on to these gifts demonstrates the work of the Holy Spirit in our life. Meekness in our life displays a security in the goodness of God. When something is taken or lost there is pain, but our trust remains in the Lord, not in our ability to get it back. He gave it. He can give it again. Possessiveness over what I have or the position I hold is the opposite of meekness. Meekness and humility are very similar character qualities. Humility is having an accurate assessment of yourself. It is a powerful position to know where you stand. Defensiveness comes from insecurity. The defensive person is unsure of where they stand so they will fight for their position. This is another form of self-protection which becomes a wall hindering relationship. We will all face challenges. You may be a parent challenged by an unruly teenager. You may experience a domineering boss who uses intimidation to get what he wants. You may need to maintain a teachable attitude when a teacher teaches something you disagree with.
