On front bearing USA Virginia Dare Born Roanoke 5c x 10, air mail 6c orange, tied by ‘LOS ANGELES/HOLLYWOOD’ machine roller cancel and ‘LOS ANGELES’ cds. Redirected by air mail to Shanghai, and then redirected again to Manila with double ring ‘MANILA/6.6.39’ cds, handstamped ‘RETURNED TO SENDER/5.7.39’ frame chop in violet. On reverse, with a lot of cancellations, ‘HOLLYWOOD/11.1.39’, ‘HONGKONG/24.1.39’ bilingual ‘CHUNGKING/29.1.39’ arrival cds. ‘AMERICAN CONSULATE/MANILA/11.4.39’ frame chop in black.
