Leoni’s Q3 report

Subsea link monitoring

Leoni AG, a maker of wires and optical fibers based in Germany, has reported a sharp rise in its third-quarter net income, reflecting increased demand from the automotive and capital goods industries. Third-quarter net income increased to €32.9 million and revenues for the quarter rose 27 percent to €913.1 million. The Wiring Systems division recorded increased sales of €474.5 million, compared to €384.4 million the year before, with the company increasing its shipments of cable harnesses and wiring systems to international car and commercial vehicle manufacturers. Sales from Leoni’s Wire & Cable Solutions division increased amid strong worldwide growth in the automotive cables business and cables for automation technology and infrastructure projects in Europe. In response to the increased demand, the company increased its workforce by 3,883 workers, taking the total to 59,039.

LIOS Technology provided two major North European utilities, Fingrid Oyj and Svenska Kraftnät, with its multimode Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS) system to monitor the HVDC subsea link between the two utility grids. The electricity transmission connection crosses the Gulf of Bothnia between southern Finland and Sweden. The Fenno-Skan 2 HVDC project creates a new 800MW, 500kV subsea electricity transmission connection following a 200km route. It forms a bipolar arrangement with the existing 550MW, 400kV Fenno-Skan link, commissioned in 1989, to provide a 40% increase in power transmission capacity between the two countries. The DTS systems provide real-time distributed temperature sensing of the HVDC interconnecting subsea cable and land cables on both sides, ensuring a safe and stable grid operation.
