L ike all organizations, the advances in technology have provided the higher education industry with a great deal of resources and efficiencies. Concepts such as Massive Online Open Courses (MOOCS), mining of large populations of data and educating traditional students in a remote/distance setting are all results of the increased utilization of information technology. Unfortunately, this increased usage by faculty and staff has created a whole new set of risk factors that were not previously present in the academic environment. Identifying these new risk factors and creating a control system to protect a university’s assets and data is a crucial portion of every institution’s mission in today’s environment.
