LS Cable & System has won two contracts, worth a total of $102 million, to supply power cables to Qatar. The company will supply 220kV level extra high-voltage transmission cables to the Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation, and deliver large-capacity electric transmission 1,000V bus ducts to the Public Works Authority of Qatar for the Hamad Medical City project. Of the two projects, the former was initiated when Qatar realised that its current power grid could not effectively keep pace with the increasing power demand generated by the continual economic development and urbanisation. A news report from Kenya states that, “an Indian firm will construct a substation and power transmission lines that will be used to evacuate electricity from two power plants at Olkaria in Naivasha. “KEC International, which signed the $27 million contract with electricity generation company, KenGen, will design, supply and install a substation and lines for transmitting power from Olkaria 1 and IV, and feeding to the national grid. “Recently, KenGen contracted a consortium of Toyota Tsusho Corporation of Japan and Hyundai Engineering Company Ltd of Korea to upgrade Olkaria I to produce an additional 140MW, and construct a new Olkaria IV at a cost of about $400 million. “The project, which will increase three-fold the amount of power generated from geothermal sources from the current 150MW to 430MW, is expected to feed the national power grid by April 2014.” KEC International Ltd – India Email : kecindia@kecrpg.com Website : www.kecrpg.com Geothermal plants for Kenya
